Sure there is. TKD with it's many facets is the most popular MA in the world (even if a lot of folks call it 'Karate') It's everywhere! ![]()

Those are CHOI, Hong Hi's Tenets. He originally crafted those for his "Taekwondo Oh Do Kwan in 1956. After he was expelled from the Oh Do Kwan, he left Korea and took his ITF with him. Those Tenets also became the ITF Tenets. None of the other 8 Kwans of Taekwondo used them, they have their own and still use them today. The Korea Taekwondo Association, the Kukkiwon and the WTF never used them either. The thing is, many people have no idea with their roots are, or if they have a clue, they usually do not know their Kwan's philosophy. However, CHOI, Hong Hi was very aggressive in getting published in articles to spread his propaganda. He was so successful that many Kukkiwon and WTF people THINK that those are the Tenets of Taekwondo, when in fact, they are only the Tenets of Oh Do Kwan and the ITF. So the real question should be do you know your Kwan roots, and what was the Philosophy of that Kwan? If you are Kukkiwon Taekwondo, do you know the philosophy of Taekwondo according to Kukkiwon? Of course, if you are ITF or Oh Do Kwan based, those are your Tenets. Alcohol |

The 'Original' Tenets of TKD are the five prime rules of the Hwa Rang. Forgive me if I can't recite them, had no coffee yet.
something like loyalty to ones country, friends, never retreat from battle and to not take a life unjust...but that lacks the sloganiscity of tenets... ITA has seven... the five plus a couple...

Jidokwan's has it's own Creedo, Pledge, Manners of Solemnity, etc., (www.taekwondojidokwan.com) and, they have nothing to do with Choi's Tenets. The KTA, the Kukkiwon nor the WTF ever adopted Choi's Tenets either, so what evidence do you have that so-called original Tenets of Taekwondo was accepted by the main Taekwondo body, or even roots bodies? Frankly - does it matter?
However you slice it, they are not bad rules to live by!

A good instructor will always seek the truth and adjust their teaching accordingly, some might even say a good student will do the same. A bad instructor will mindlessly follow what's easy, convenient and easily swallowed by the crowd. Personally for myself it matters what motivated my teacher (and teachers teachers). If we look at the life of Hong Hi Choi, we begin to understand his motive for writing those tenets, and the nationalistic twisted confucian propaganda that revealed their true intension. As for me, I know my Kwan's philosophy, I understand it. I also know that all Kwan's were at odd's with the dictatorial General Choi, my Kwan being on the front line against him. Even without Choi, why would I teach a different Kwan's creed? Especially when a specific Kwan's motive for teaching such a creed was support for dictatorial indoctrination? In the end, why would anyone (especially an instructor) accept the lie that there is such a thing as the tenets of Taekwondo? I encourage others to find their roots and learn more. Alcohol |

There are things that I nit-pick over, others I don't. And frankly, while the history is interesting, it's not relevant for what I do. The tenets do portrait nicely that we as a whole don't wish to be seen as some yahoos who only kick and punch.
I read about the early days of TKD - a whole bunch of egos colliding! The General had the power to match his ego....all there is to it!
