we lack the spiritual connection that still is present in Asian culture...MA is something that you do, not live. In this climate the Tenets do their part.

I agree, western students also lack the cultural understanding and commitment to loyalty.

So in this climate, the tenets will keep us all dumbed down, like we are. After all this was the motive of the original tenets of Choi.

Best Regards,

Alcohol

No, the tenets make the connection from MA as sport to everyday life in this climate.

That MA is not just something you do to occupy your time, but something that can have an impact on every day life!

HwaRang Do code of honor:

Serve your lord with loyalty
Serve your parents with filial piety
Trust your friends
Never retreat from a battle
When taking life, be selective

This is what im living whit, i try to do this, even tho, the modern commandments are more aproching (from my point of view) by society and have been forced by society, and i never folow society, i folow my self.

This is the list of modern comm. i do aprov some of those, but not all, so i do not live by them, even tho most of them are already ironic to respect and loyal to be.

Commandments of modern Taekwondo:
Loyalty to your country
Respect your parents
Faithfulness to your spouse
Respect your brothers and sisters
Loyalty to your friends
Respect your elders
Respect your teacher
Never take life unjustly
Indomitable spirit
Loyalty to your school
Finish what you begin

Maybe some of u will think that im not right, but how i lived threw my life and saw threw my eyes, nobody can say im wrong

Well "FINISH WHAT YOU BEGIN" is kinda complicated. Sometimes you just can't finish what you begin due to special cirrcumstances.

Take my cirrcumstances for example:

For me at least I know the Martial Arts has literally saved my life. Otherwise I probably wouldn't be here today talking.

Martial Arts has helped me through alot of tough situations, both physical, mental and spiritually.

Also: regarding the tenets of TKD. I guess there good as far as teaching people to live a certain way, however not used in the original concept, they serve a good purpose. If only our TKD organizations would teach TKD properly and the way it should be taught, then I guess it makes for a good substitute.

Either way Martial Arts always comes from the heart first!!!!

I value self control.

This may be a hard poll.
Is anyone here from Chung Do Kwan roots? Do you know the Chung Do Kwan Codes, Pledge, Oath, etc.?

General Choi listed the tenets in what he felt was the order of importance. So Courtesy is #1.

Funakoshi also had Courtesy as a priority.

>>>After he was expelled from the Oh Do Kwan,<<

Expelled from the Oh Do Kwan? Hmmmm. What is your source for this info? I know GM Son "expelled" him and others from the Chung Do Kwan in an infamous newspaper ad whic seemingly lead to GM Son's leaving the Chung Do Kwan shortly thereafter only to have the others who he purportedly expelled not only remain but one succeeeded him as president.

There is no doubt that as the political winds changed direction in Korea General Choi was no longer in a favored position and was made an ambassador.

But the "expulsion" term with regard to the Oh Do Kwan I have not seen before so I would like to know from whence it came.

As did Mabuni, Toyama, Kano and others. My point is that those Tenets are originally from the Oh Do Kwan. The other 8 Kwan had their own philosophies.
