So I got my third belt last night (Gold). It truly shows the effort one puts in to make it to a different belt. Being 35 years old I'm pretty out of shape and starting to feel a lot of imporvement in my body. One thing I have made a big improvement in is the health of my knees. I can walk up and down the stairs at work now and my knees don't hurt anymore. Working my legs out and stretching out my hamstrings 3 times a day has done wonders. I never thought my knees would stop hurting and worried about them especially when I started doing jump kicks at school.
I've learned a lot from this forum just reading. I don't post much and appreciate any feedback. Also, one more thing. Does anyone realize how hard it is for a 35 year old, 6' 4", 300 lb giant to do "Burpees" is? Wow! |

I study at Ernie Reye's World Martial Arts. They do Tae Kwon do, Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Boxing, grappling, and stick, knife, and gun defense. Burpees are this: From a standing position, squat down and put your hands on the ground, kick your legs back behind you, do a push up, pull your legs back into a squatted position, and jump as high as you can in the air. |

burpees are what we call squat-thrusts and yeah, they can be brutal...

When I feel good and not hurting I have been doing lunges up the stairs by missing a step when I go up the stairs so I get a good workout. My chiropractor said I've plenty of great muscle to keep the knee where it needs to be and as I said before it's my Hamstrings killing me. I was seriously at a 35 degree angle with bringing my leg up while on my back before I started do MA and now I'm about 45 to 50 degrees which is great for for and has taken my pain away. Now, to get past 90 degrees. I also have a pretty good treadmill so I try and walk and do sprints on that for about 45 minutes 3 times a week. My weight hasn't really changed but 3 lbs since I started in November. I have definately built muscle and push it hard everytime I work out. It feels good to know that when I'm done with class I have to change cause I'm soaking wet. I can just imagine what it's going to be like for me when I drop weight and see the difference in speed and endurance I have. And here's one difference. I could only do 5 pushups when I started and I did 15 on my test day and I'm feeling it. Feels Great! ![]() |

We take class time very seiously but let me just tell you how glad I am that we can all joke around and have a great time every night in class. Even the instructors know how to to have a lot of fun and laugh at themselves. Since I have free time I'd thought I'd ramble a bit. I appreciate the one on one help I've gotten from my instructors when it's come close to testing time. I've had several classes where I've had 45 miutes with one of the instructors giving me instruction on how to do all the punches, kicks, and pad work we do. Taking it real slow and getting that help can really change the way you do something. For instance, I was doing a slide step round house kick at about 3 feet and locked out, and with 10 minutes help I was doing that same kick at about 4 1/2 feet while locking my knee out. I thought I was leaning back far enough but I guess not. Once I understood my balance it was all clear to me. Oh well, I definately have no intentions of being the next MMA fighter on the block but I definately will be in enough shape to make sure my son does not sit in front of the TV all weekend and to get out there and have fun in life. I think of all the great times I had with my family catching frogs and fish at the local creek and hiking around for hours on weekends because we weren't allowed to watch tv on the weekends. I could care less if my son is not the first kid to make it to the last level of the new kill em, bang em up video game on Playstation 8. I'm in it for the fun and exercise. And just for the simple pleasure of my knees not hurting anymore is bonus! Peace Out! |

LOL! You can't measure yourself against the 16 year olds! Believe me, I tried!
They are still on a first name basis with the Energizer Bunny (and keep going and going...) The burpees sound brutal....just the right thing for instructor's Torture Hour! ![]()

Then again, they probably weren't in peak condition. If they were, it would have been reverse! I got smoked by some highschool swim teamer's in the pool. These kids run about 30 minutes every morning, swim 2000 to 5000 meters per workout and lift weights on the side. Real athletes!

Yeah, that same kid in my class does wrestling, and weight lifting as well in school. Ok, here's a random question. Anyone ever done those pushups where there's 4 people facing different directions and everyone has their feet on the arch of another persons back and so when you do a pushup, no one's feet are actually on the ground? Holy cow. That's odd and hard to do. |
