I am only used to Chinese, though I have started to cook Japanese style (hard if you can't get any good ingridience in the store though) A friend from India let me sample a few of her creations....it was a taste that would take some time getting used to....

I'm partial to Malaysian/Singaporean.
Nasi Lemak (Malay-style more so than Chinese), preferably home-cooked... Char-kway-teow... Hokkien Mee... Mutton Murtabak, roti prata with fish gravy.. But the best food in the world is the beef hor-fun in Singapore's Geylang District.

is malay food like phillipino food becasue the food my gf describes sound delicious. She says phillipino food is cloest to chinese but the stuff she describes doesn't sound like chinese food to me. Bearing in mind I'm talking chinese food here in the US, I think chinese food from china or other countries would probably be better maybe I just haven't been to a really good chinese resturant in a while.

I'd say Filipino food is closer to Chinese food. Pancit Canton is pretty much chow mien, lumpia are pretty much spring rolls. But with their own twists.
You also get the Spanish-influenced dishes - caldereta, empanadas... Malay food tends to be curry/chilli-based. But as in the PI there is a large Chinese minority in Malaysia, so you get the Chinese influences as well. I love Nonya/Perenekan food - Chinese/Malay fusion But don't ever let your gf talk you into eating balut ![]()

You've never eaten any kind of food that would fall under the very broad category of "Asian"? Wow, where do you live?

My preferences:
1. Thai. 2. Japanese. 3. Chinese - Korean (tied). 4. Vietnamese. 5. Malay - Singaporean (tied). This doesn't mean that I think Malay food is nasty, quite the opposite...
