Well, that what happens....
A very nice TKD practitioner was knocked out cold last night. A round kick to the chin, right on the sweet spot. OK, more background. We had rank advancements last night. freesparring. Now, the person on the receiving end was not one to drop hands or so, just one of them things. And the person throwing the kick was not out to make contact either. As one of the Judges put it: If you have any doubts if TKD is effective... And here I am wondering: why don't the people who drop their hands get knocked out.... ![]()

That is a pretty ironic post.
An art that often allows people to fight with low hands (because it often totally discounts punches to the head) then claims effectiveness when one of it's own practitioners gets knocked out by fighting the way he/she has been trained by TKD to fight? |

The ironic thing is that the lady is not one to keep her hands down! And the guy who knocked her out is not one to hit overly hard either, we only do light to medium contact! As the judging instructor put it - and he had seen more than TKD in his carrier, and he is about twice the size of the guy who threw the kick - it would have knocked him out...it was just everything right. Angle, speed, what have you.
The iconic thing is, those who need to learn to keep her hands up never get clocked in the noggin... But, stuff like that happens. I wasn't sharing this to start a big discussion on whether or not TKD is effective or not when everybody got their hands down.

Ali received his hardest head shots with his hands up.
When he had his hands down, his opponents could not hit him. Fact is, none of you know any elite WTF fighters who were knocked out, "because their hands were down". Alcohol |

well, sorry about that...seems kicks to the head are more common, hands up or down.
I think I did have a point when I posted though.... oh, yes. somethings about TKD kicks - even high ones - being potentially very effective. And yes, you keep your hands down habitually, you are asking for trouble. However, this specific occurance was a (un)lucky shot. The person going down was not in the habit of dropping her hands and the person knocking her out was not hitting hard...just one of them things. A little reminder that MA, even with light to medium contact can be dangerous.
