I don't know that I'd say ex cons are unskilled. They just aren't fancy. You might say they are efficient

A lot of people carry knives without actually doing much training with them.

In my observations working in emergency medicine/trauma most of the victims I’ve seen die from knife attacks were repeatedly stabbed in the chest and/or neck. Personally I have never seen anyone die from arm cuts/stabs or leg cuts/ stabs but I have heard of it happening like that doorman in NYC who’s femoral was cut by a Kali practitioner.

If you do end up facing a skilled Kali guy with a knife and you are unarmed I highly doubt the outcome for you will be good, regardless of how good your disarm/knife defense skills are.

That sewing machine theory may not always be true, some criminals prefer a slashing motion such as cutting your throat from ear to ear; most of the time from the rear.

It maybe a matter of preference or the "shiv" they have is more conducive to slashing rather than stabbing.

I once asked a low life skin head (an Arian Nation gang member) who had spent many years in prison a very stupid question, I asked him what his techniques was? He looked at me like I was the dumbest Mothafucker on the planet and said “What technique” I just go forward stabbing as hard and as fast as I can.”

But certainly both methods or combination of methods get used.

In which case a thrust kick would be your first reaction. True?

I am not against the thrust kick, once in FonF I was attacking the GG with a knife and I bummed rushed him. The GG planted a thrust kick into my chest so hard my sternum hurt for 2 month, and BTW that kick stopped my attack.

The big thing here however is that this was training and he knew I had a knife and I attacked from outside arm length distance…who knows how that would have played out under real world conditions. But if the distance is appropriate the thrust kick isn’t a bad idea.

On one occasion, many years ago, I was attacked by a guy with a screw driver (and a couple of his friends) I used thrusts kicks to keep him at bay. Though my kicks didn’t cause much damage it kept him back and away from my torso until a firearm could come into play.

That firearm was introduced by a civilian CCW holder who I didn’t know who intervened on my behalf...likely saving my life.

The only other time I was attacked with a knife was in Iraq when our convoy got stuck in traffic and folks began to gather around our vehicles. They were upset because on the day before some locals were killed in a firefight between foreign contractors and insurgence in that area.

One guy jumped on the hood of our SUV (jumping around like a mad man) and as I jumped out from the passenger side he leaped at me. I didn’t see the knife in his hand until after I had thrown him to the ground. I don’t know if he stabbed at me or not but if he did my body armor did its job because later when I checked myself I didn’t have any injuries.

Throws are a viable option against knife attacks. Arms throws (such as tai otoshi) are taught at many seminars I attend. I'm just not that comfortable trying to throw someone who has a knife. I'd rather break his wrist with a wrist lock.

I agree, I wouldn't intentionally try to throw someone with a knife unless I was behind him and had his back and onkly then in the fucked up tangle where I cannot get control of his knife hand.

In the situation mentioned above he was on the hood of my SUV and jumping at me as I stepped out of the vehicle. I didn't even know he had a knife until after he hit the ground. Between his height in the air and his forward momentum it was an easy throw just by grabbing him and swing stepping.

At the time I thought he was going for my rifle.

It happened so fast I couldn't get my muzzle (M4) on him fast enough before he leaped at me.

Suppose you are cornered? Or better yet, suppose it's your front yard?
