Default Awareness and reaction skills

I recently read about how using a punching bag too much can be bad because it destroys your awareness of your opponent's ability to attack or counterattack because you get used to the punching bag it won't hit back. I do most of my training outside of classes by using a punching bag and I think my awareness and reaction skills have got worse when sparring. Is shadow boxing just as bad for this ? Or should I be doing more shadow boxing as well as punching bag? How can I practise my technique by myself without my awareness and reaction skills getting worse?

As long as the punching bag doesn't become your fundamental training tool, you should be allright. The punching bag helps develop power pretty well. I'd recommend that you don't stand stationary in front of a bag unless you're doing pyramid drills - otherwise you should hit and move just like you shadow box, except you're hitting a solid target.
