Fist Ambush--attack!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

In my Army Days, we were taught that when we are Ambushed then we are supposed to ATTACK. Can you apply this to unarmed combat or martial arts situations? I think you can. I was ambushed early this week while walking down a drug infested street ( On job related business). Instinctively from my Army and martial arts training I attacked. I mean it was a military style ambush as I was walking along. The only difference was my attacker was unarmed or never got to pull his concealed weapon. I immediately went into defensive/attack mode including a Kia (attack yell). No time for talking or dialogue. Every second was critical.

Can anybody relate to this thread? Did the Army (for those of you who were in the Army) teach you; when you are Ambushed--Attack. It may save your life or save you from being seriously injured. It saved me this week. Thanks Uncle Sam.

Alright man?, i donno bout the whole military thing but i agree that the best defence is a good offence.......in situations like down that alley you blatently gotta treat it as a life or death situation.....i mean a total stranger attacked you. You dont know his/her mental state, wheather he/she has weapons..........so you gotta do whatever it takes...putem outta action but sounds like you handled yourself well, nice one. Im guessin your military training helps you psychologically in stressful situations like that?

Both helped, military training and martial arts training. Didn't get too much ambush training in martial arts but got plenty of ambush, counter ambush training as a 13F in the Army.

read "The Art of War". its full of lil nuggets of goodness. the ambush attack thing kinda stuck a chord with me on a passage from that book that i have always liked. basically when you are weak make your enemy believe you are strong, and when you are strong let the enemy believe you are weak"

There are several versions, I have read the Tuz sun (sp) version a couple of times. I agree, it's a classic for martial artist and warrriors. Especially enjoyed the chapters on secret agents and attack by fire.

There are a number of styles of Pentjak Silat that use deception very much like this...

Weak counterpart position is the fighting method of tricking your opponent (enemy) into a false sense of security.

Bruce Lee (r) called this "ATTACK BY DRAWING"

It could be considered a very similar idea. Pentjakers take it to an extreme. Rather than draw a physical attack the idea of weak counterpart position is to draw the emotional conviction of superiority. I think of a Gracie in the early UFC pulling gaurd. Give up a superior position? What was going through the mind of his opponent was something like "this is going to be easy"... right before they got choked out.

One example might be to feint a complete lack of skill or confidence. Even pretending to be clumsy or drunk... Cripled, sore, injured, ill or other.

I have "accidently" head butted, elbowed, body bumped and tripped threatening individuals. I just seem to be in the wrong place at the right time... I'm just so nervous and easily intimidated.

Weak counterpart position. More like a classic trap in a chess game than bait. A feint of sorts.

Feints are known as the mark of an expert fighter. It seperates the good fighters from the expert fighters. Feints can be done with the eyes, shoulders, feet as well as the hands.

Yeah I hate when i'm on the way to the 7-11 to get a cherry slurpee and people leap out of the sky with parachuttes and others use a pincer attack and leap out of the sand from all angles to trap me.

Oh you have x-ray vision too? I love that power. I use it to see through clothing and noticed concealed weapons too.

You're much stronger than I am, I usually throw loose change and pocket lint at thier eyes because I cannot lift a Kia.

No, but I did learn that in freezing weather, many buttcheeks of bald men shoved up against you can keep you warm throughout the night.

All fun aside.... Ambush attacks are a common tactic that you will (likely) experience sometime during your lifetime.

"You will never know when you will be attacked - it just happens".

Capt. Daniel Morgan

Editor's Note: Capt. Morgan is former commander of Headquarters and
Headquarters Company, 3rd Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault).

Counter ambush tactics will improve your reaction time and might save your life.

Now the kids here can make fun of "Cap'n MORGAN" if they like and even dress up like a popular rum running pirate and assume the one leg on a keg position...
