![]() | ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Participants ranged widely in experience from a few months to over twenty years practicing their martial art of choice. The average experience in the current style was 4.5 years and the median length of experience was 3.75 years. Overall total amount of years training in any martial art was significantly higher suggesting that these individuals typically trained in some other style prior to their current art. The mean was 9.5 years in this category and the median equaled 7 years. Various answers appeared when asked why they continued to train. Thirty-four percent stated fun or enjoyment was the primary motivator to train. Physical health came in second place with 20 percent. Surprisingly, self-defense only garnered 16 percent of the vote. Mental health and competition chimed in with 12 and 8 percent, respectively. The “other” category was responsible for the remaining 5 percent or responses. On the question regarding street fights, 66 percent had been in a street fight. Of that group, 42% stated martial arts training was not helpful in dealing with the situation. Why weren’t martial arts effective in those situations? Primarily, it was due to these confrontations occurring prior to training, but 5 of 14 reported ineffective techniques or the absence of ground fighting skills in their arsenal as the reason. With a few exceptions, participants regarded their primary and current martial art most effective during a self-defense situation. However, approximately 30 percent failed to respond or had their answers discarded for a variety of reasons. Some included two martial arts, a grappling or ground fighting style combined with standup skills such as boxing or Muay Thai. While there is no doubt that the combination of ground and standup striking skills are vitally important to safeguard oneself and to win a streetfight, the question unfortunately asked for ONE single art best suited for self-defense. |

![]() | Triangle: Out of curiosity, how many people responded to your survey? I hope is was a large enough survey since you were just posting percentages. If your sample wasn't large enough, your results may not be indicative for the interpolation of the responses. |

![]() | Karl, are you one of those dudes that tries to put together your kid's toys on the day of Christmas and don't bother to read the instructions? Seems so. I posted my opinion on this forum. If there were 50 people that expressed their opinions then YES, I was one of 50 |
