What is, in anyones experience, the fastest way to put down an unarmed opponent?

Use pressure point striking.

The pressure point found just to the side of the point of the jaw is pretty good when struck with the fist.

Yes. A good blow to the jaw will bring about immediate knock out.

But it has to be a good one!

I'd have to say for a male: a good snap kick to the testicles might do it, or for both male and female id say a strike to the middle of the chest or a strike to the jaw

Maybe a strike to the middle of the chest......if you have a battering ram.

he didnt say it was best in all situations, he said 'could be'.

Besides, a kick to the nads DOES hurt, it DOES make you bend over, the average thug is likely to have a conditioned head/neck than have practised taking nad shots. A 'determined' opponent won't be stopped by actually being KO'd himself.

I'd say a good hard cross to the jaw/nose.

if you go by that logic then virtually every technique is unsuitable. For most people it will hurt or make them double over. It's a good move. It's not perfect, but then no move is. It's underrated, that's all.

personally I'd always go with the cross though, or finger jab to the neck.

Well after they kick the opponent in the nuts, they are supprised when the opponent keeps on coming and doesnt stop.
This here statement hits up against the basic problem with questions like "what's the best (technique/throw/style/whatever) to use in a fight?"

A hard punch to the jaw will work on anybody IF they have their hands down, and they come straight at you, and they don't duck, and you know how to punch well, and, and , and.

A kick in the nuts will work too, IF all the stars line up for you.

An eye gouge, or a pressure point, or some kinda judo chop will work too - again, IF the situation is just right for that technique and you are able to apply it.

The REAL answer to the question is; no one technique or set of techniques will work all the time. You need:

1)a style appropriate for self defense
2)practice on the techniques and
3)LIVE CONTACT SPARRING

All three of those plus many hours of work in order to give yourself a dependable advantage in a 'street' fight.

Or, you could just be a natural ass-whooping animal... but if you were, then you probably wouldn't be here asking for advice.
