CHICAGO RIDGE, Ill. -- A 6-year-old Chicago-area boy who rescued a playmate from a swimming pool earlier this month has died.

Donald Houser-Richerme had been hospitalized in critical condition since June 7, when he was unable to climb out of the half-empty apartment complex pool.

Authorities say the boy was with his younger brother and a 5-year-old friend when they went through an unlocked gate.

The friend either jumped or fell into the shallow end of the pool, but slid into the water. Donald came to her aid even though he couldn't swim. He pushed her to safety, but was unable to save himself.

Authorities say the gate was open after a maintenance man had cut the pool's lock.

No charges will be filed against the owner of the apartment complex.

Sometimes courage comes in small packages and with a big price. 6 year old hero. As much as it hurts his parents, could you ask that he didn't act in his courageous manner.

I read about this in the newspaper. very sad. the boy was brave. not many grown adults could do what the 6 yr old did

^^^ you're right, and not in this day an age. Thanks for this, it cheered me up and at the same time, saddened me a bit.

locally in my town there was a family playing basketball, dad and son and some teenagers wanted to use the court and the Dad wanted to finish the game, so the crowd of teenagers beat the guy into the hospital for not leaving promptly. it is the world we live in. I am so glad i've been taking martial arts for some time now, i wouldn't want to be outside lately without the ability to competently defend myself. And what does this say about the kids coming up, just no values whatsoever, they need some martial training!

So sad that a young child won't grow up to become an adult.

thats horrible news. why do so many people deserving to live die? this kid was trying to protect a life, and yet he loses his own. and then theirs others who destroy life, but live to the plump age of whatever.

my prayers to his family.
