Relevant Thread: MA attracts two types of people

Aside from kids, I have found that MA attracts 3 general types of people.

The first kind enjoy the training and technique and love to test their skills against non-compliant partners/opponents. They question/evaluate technique/strategies against evidence-based practices - the put up or shut up test/prove it technique. The same test and standards they use in other parts of their lives, such as health and medicine, they use in their MA. They know their MA training will not make them invincible and that taking on multiple opponents will be to their disadvantage.

The second kind do it for health and fitness, sport, and socializing. They have no misconceptions of it being anything more than.

The third kind look like adults and by all means fit the criteria for voting. But when you observe them talking and acting the the way they do, you notice that something is off. Their mental status/level, when it comes to MA anyways, is still in that middle transition area from the child-based fantasy world and adult-based real world. They need/think MA will make them a better person . They believe in mystical powers like chi and no-touch KO's . They believe that if they strike/block/attack/defend with odd parts of their body and/or with odd stances, that this will make them bad-ass fighters as they add it to their arsenal. They see that taking on multiple opponents is feasable with their MA "training," yet they continually chime in with, "...grappling/fighting on the ground is dangerous in a street fight," to criticize BJJ and "...MMA is not real-life."

Great, all these years of tuition on perfecting the "hadou-ken fireball inverted drunken monkey fist strike to the toes" were wasted

    Good post.

LOL There's another kind too. The shadow guy. He's generally quiet, reserved, polite and tends to go unnoticed. These types are rare birds and typicaly have combat experience in addition to MA training in various styles. He's likely studied in more than one country and favors weapon based killing techniques over restraint or sport based skills. You won't find him selling seminars or enrolled at your local Do-jang but maybe you've heard rumors about "that guy" "out there" that no one has been able to beat. How many have tried and failed?. He doesn't wear a Gi or a black belt but he's out there, and he's real. He keeps up on the state of the industry but feels unimpressed by the fads. He may drop by your school but you probably wouldn't bother to look twice or even recognize him unless he put on a Gi. How sad...

"In all countries where personal freedom is valued, however much each individual may rely on legal redress, the right of each to carry arms - and these the best and the sharpest - for his own protection in case of extremity, is a right of nature indelible and irrepressible, and the more it is sought to be repressed the more it will recur."

We had a dude like that. I never sparred with him, never saw him spar, but when you mentioned his name the instructors at his school they looked at you like you had lost your damn mind. I trained at a branch of 1 of 3 schools in a about a 40 mile radius. He trained at the main school so only saw him a few times but there was nothing impressive looking about him.

I asked my instructor about him one day and he broke it down for me. He obviously had a foreign accent which I came to learn was Russian. He served 10 years in a special forces type sect of the Soviet Army before the end of the cold war. He was apparently one of those guys that was freakishly strong, and would take 6 shots(exaggerating, but you get the point) to the head in order to land a blow. Thing is, he was one of the quietest guys I've ever meet. He didn't act like Tommy Tuff Nuts or anything, he just pretty much minded his business. Something scary about that.

Dammit man, I'm feeling a bit left out here!
Number one and two fit me well; I love technique and figure things out about it, train hard and sparr.. just love it. But I also enjoy the social part at my club, and I started training just as a fun workout. I still think it is a great workout
Also, I'm 25 years old.. so where the **** do i fit in?? Help me! I'm lost!

gabbah, I'm in the same boat too

I'm part of the 1st and 2nd group - at this point in my life it's more about fun and sport, with no desire for heavy competition or proving myself in the street (I don't need the never-ending drama associated with it or the criminal record - live up your juvenile years!)

Could it be that he who has said that is in fact HuSanYan himself?
