I know there is better audience support in Japan, and more money in Pride, but In my opinion Pride is less a tactical fight fan's show than the UFC. Pride is a brawl-gawker event, and the UFC is more of a thinking man's MMA contest.
I agree that the live UFC audience leaves a lot to be desired, but at least they don't stop the fight and issue red cards every time a foreign competitior reverses the ground fight. I like the fence. It is there for both contestants to use to their advantage. I am also embarrased for those poor Pride morons than wear hippie suits or fag tuxedo stripper suits as they enter the arena chewing on big cigars. What's that all about...? There are some good fighters in Pride FC (Rampage, Wanderlei, Nog, etc), but that's just because the money is there at the moment. Let's not even talk about Pride's judges' scoring... Anyway , I realize everyone is entitled to a stupid opinion, but I like the UFC format much better than Pride...

I like the UFC best. They allow their guys to spend a little more time on the ground than Pride does. Plus I hate that whole pull the guys out from under the ropes into the middle of the ring thing. It just reminds me of the WWE, especially when you factor in judges scoring.

Think about it: You're a big name bad-ass with a school that's doing well and a bunch of adoring students. You could go dedicate half a year to training, compete for two years, win some lose some, and then get a title shot that you hold for three or four defenses, and then you lose. Suddenly, you're not the "former UFC Champion" you're the guy who lost to (fill in the blank). I personally see the value of competing, but my point is that a lot of new blood out there doesn't see it. Why fight your heart and soul out for a couple grand when you can fight under easier rules and get paid ten times as much as a boxer? |
