Default Mens Journal lists the four best martial arts for surviving any situation

Mens Journal Sept. 2003 lists the four best martial arts for surviving any situation as follows:

MuayThai
Brazilian Jujitsu
JKD
Krav Maga

Though I have never trained Muay Thai, I’d have to disagree. It’s my understanding MT doesn’t typically train any Self Defense or Grappling. The others listed I have has some training in each and would agree.

Also, I was reading the thread, “Which arts are the best combination of arts is best” and I was wondering for what? (Any Situation , Self Defense, Sport, UFC/Pride, Street, To Kill?)

My opinion for self defense or surviving any situation is grappling type arts with a high focus on practicing self defense drills. i.e. getting out of a head lock or getting someone off you that’s pinning you to the ground. If I really want to defend myself, I don’t what to fight. For example, if I get attacked in my house or on the street, I want to get myself and my family away from the attacker. I also want to be able to fight long enough for my family to escape.

My opinion of beating the crap out to someone is any striking art which utilizes full contact sparing.

I would add Japanese JuJutsu to that list, so long as it is trained without over compliant partners

Why is something telling me that some big KravMaga federation paid the journal?...
Also: JKD... which one?

Men's Journal suggesting the "FOUR GREATEST MARTIAL ARTS FOR SELF_DEFENSE!" is like 'Wired' magazine giving fashion advice.

Heck the Defend.net forum community alone has been unable to solve this intruiging question for years now - and some people here actually know what they are talking about.

I think you’re correct. A Krav Maga instructor from New York named Rhon Mizrachi, I believe helped the magazine with the article. Also, IMO Krav Maga people think their art is similar to JKD with some more progressive training.

Good Post BJJ-2/04, though many Thai schools also teach self defense. Also, my local Krav Maga School does not do any full contact kickboxing or wrestling. They do have some good self defense though. In my opinion full contact training is an absolute must. Anyway, welcome to the forum.

err if i was a mugger i would be far more afraid of a thai fighter than a JKD or krav maga fighter. as for not doing any self defense- ever been to a thai boxing class?

many people forget that most crims on the loose would mug and attack in groups and often with edged weapons, often under the influence of drugs/alchohol or both. add testosterone, nothing to do, no money and angry at society then you have a potent cocktail for trouble.

i'm with Thai Bri on this one
