Default What IS Scott Sonnon's style like?

This guy seems to be the buzzword online these days, and even has haters who want to smear his name.

Does anyone know what he actually teaches? It sounds allot like he applied a JKD/SBG philosophy of "aliveness" and "economy" to SOMBO, mixed with sports science stuff. But he has so many vids that I can't quite rap my head around what it is he actually DOES teach, you know?

So, gimme the scoop, please. I'd be interested to hook up with anyone in Portland SE if you're one of his guys.

Trolls don't even think about posting here.

He teaches a Russian style called ROSS. Its very hard to explain the art. There is a lot of what people call Aliveness. But there is also a softer side to learn how to control fear. It has several directions, Renovated Judo + Sambo, Hand to hand and a few others. You get knowledge of all ranges of combat in the classes as well as learning weapon and multiple defense. The art is a brother of Samoz, which was created by a soldier who had problems due to a maiming bayonet blow in Russo Japanse war. He created a system that could be used by people with out incredible strength. For more info go to www.rmax.tv and wait for PHROSS girls response. She can explain it better than I can. I would also suggest asking Sonnon himself at his forum or mma.tv. There is pretty much only one person that I have seen that have tried to put down Sonnon. He went to a forum to ask a question about ROSS and Sonnon answered. He answered very well, too well it was beyond the guy who was asking inteligent level. Since then he has gone around forum to forum making up things about Sonnon and running away whenever a person invites him to a class or seminar or provides proof against his bogus claims. This guy has never trained in any russian art.

Hey; I was actualy going to sit this one out, but now that CKD brought it up...James, ROSS is awsome, and if you have the opportunity to find someone who will coach you in it, and/or to purchase Scott's material, I would recommend it. I don't know what your experience is in Martial Arts, mine was nill, until a few months ago. I can tell you that since July I have learned how to deal with fear reactivity, how to use my body more efficiently, I've become more coordinated, more graceful in more realms of movement. I've gained confidence, and to boot, I have learned to defend my life should the need ever arise. I still have so much to learn, and every day I wake up looking forward to my next training session. If someone had told me a year ago that learning how to defend myself could be so elegant I would have laughed. I would have asked "what could be so elegant about blocking, punching, kicking?" But ROSS isn't that. It's something you have to experience for yourself, I can tell you what it is, and perhaps you can fathom it; but you'll know it when you feel it. I hope I explained it well for you, It is a passion of mine, so I know I sound a bit enamoured when I write of ROSS. I implore you, check out some more of my posts, and perhaps that will explain a little better.

Thanks CKD and PHGIRL. It sounds pretty down my line of thought, something like Chi Sao meets full contact resistance. Scott seems to have an intimidating array of video courses. Any direction for someone with only a little JKD and limited sub grappling background?

What do you mean by fear reactivity? I think I understand but I've only read the term over on Scott's site.
