First off I want to make clear that I am just stating an opinion and also want to say that I RESPECT EVERYONES opinion. This is not an attack, just something i want to comment on.

All i ever read when going on any type of forum is the constant bashing of martial arts. Now what I am going to say has probably been said thousands of times. All I read is that "BJJ is not good for the street" Muay Thai is just a sport, karate and kung fu arent effective. This is how I look at it. Who cares? why doesnt everyone just do what they want, we should be exchanging info on certain techniques and maybe swapping stories. It just amazes me that everyone is such an expert on martial arts.
Heres how I look at it. Knowing something is better than nothing, maybe knowing something might be able to help you. Of course i am not referring to yoga. Look u wanna say BJJ is ineffective b/c we dont deal with multiple opponents etc. Well that is the truth we don't(i have heard that only a small handful of BJJ schools address multiple attackers) regardless, the truth is when 2-3 guys attack you chances are that your going to get a beating, not always but more than likely, regardless of your style. MOST schools do not even spar properly one on one, so how is that going to help you with multiple attackers if the sparring for one on one is inadequate? This isnt a BJJ defense arguement its a realistic opinion. If all i know is grappling and i am fighting qa lot of people then hell no i dont want to go to the ground. but if i fall or get knocked down maybe there is a slight small minute possibility that my grappling training could help me get off the ground. most likely not, once again how would it hurt to know how to grapple.
Okay weapons, once again BJJ does not address them. But i look at it like this. In martial arts we are taught for example to defend against a punch. but sometimes the defense doesnt always work and we have to switch to another technique. It doesnt always work and we end up getting punched now take that and remove the punch and insert a knife. So now instead of getting punched you could get stabbed.
All these self defense arts bash BJJ but maybe by adding BJJ it might help you out. Same thing goes for what i was saying about weapons. It might not be smart to try and fight against a weapon, but KNOWING these defenses couldnt hurt
ENough with this crap about eye gouging and groin strikes etc. Okay fine once again good to know, BUT just because they are not taught in your school/dojo/academy etc doesnt mean they cannot be used. If you have the guy in a dominant position you could hurt him more than he can you. SO if i have someone tied up or pinned whatever and he is immobilized I could use some sort of foul tactic, wheres the problem with this? it can be done.
The arguement with that is,"BJJer's dont train these tactics" Okay well neither do a lot of standup arts, they PRACTICE them, they do not train them, there is a difference, practicing them in the mirror during kata or form is not the same as training live. If a practitioner of his art that focuses on these techniques feel they can do them by "practicing" them on a nonresisting opponent then a grappler could practice them while training, so the long mumbled confusing point to this section is do not say that grapplers cannot because i feel they have a chance even though it is not in grappling repetoire. also look at it this way, take Mike tyson for example he is a nasty puncher, a tough guy, a strong guy, and an animal the way he fight the way he thinks. Do you really think that if u fought tyson in the street(yes i know it would never happen)that when he comes at you like a ferociuos tiger that an eye gouge is going to hurt him? Hes going to still come after you.
I also read that the original UFC's were not accurate because the practitioners of the styles were not the best at it. Thats a poor arguement to me because contrary to what some people might say Royce was not the best representative of his art, by far there are better fighters and grapplers than royce. So if u want to make any arguement just say that those practitioners had no clue to fight on the ground.
I did AMerican Kenpo, Tae kwon do, Kempo, and the truth is i felt more comfortable with BJJ and Boxing/Muay Thai for fighting. because thats the best of the basics to me. boxers train their hands which is important b/c MOST street fights start with punching etc. I dont personally see the use of all these fancy up on one leg stances, these wide and wacky hand displays etc. get to the point!
ALl martial arts have pros and cons including BJJ. But take from systems that work. All these deadly martial art guys who are street lethal and think Bruce LEE was great, dont understand his philosophy, he kicked punched, grappled, learn those and then learn some weapon defenses and make sure you are in shape.grappling can offer other arts a lot and in turn BJJ should not be limited in its outlook even if u arent fighting MMA, u still have to learn how to stand up and fight.
This post is WAAAAAY TOOOO LONG and probably confusing i havent really planned this ahead of time i am mostly winging it.
