Default difference between machado and gracie

Anyone know the difference between Machado training and Graice training? Or technique?

I think you'll find more difference between individual schools than comparing Machado V Gracie.

From what I've seen, the Gracie schools tend to do a little more self-defence in their regular classes (e.g. starting with defence against grabs/standing headlocks, etc, before moving onto groundwork/sport BJJ).

That said, I'm sure there are Machado schools out there that do this too, depending on the focus of the instructor.

They all train together.

The Machados grew up training with the Gracies, they are cousins.

The big question is really what are you looking for in a school?

The Machados have produced more champions than the Gracies who live in the USA. The Machados are also directly associated with Carlos Gracie Jr. who has produced more champions than anyone else in the world, including his own family.

However, even within the Machado family there is a great deal of variation. Rigan has a crushing style, Jean Jacques is just slick. They are both incredible teachers as are the rest of the Machados and they tend to adapt BJJ to the student so that the student will get the most out of the experience.

Please don't take my post as an insult targeted towards any Gracie family member. I have ZERO experience with the Gracies and I was merely posting what I actually knew.

Renzo and Ralph's schools both produce champions as do many of the school's associated with Royce. I am a fan of the Gracies and intended ZERO insult towards anyone because I excluded their names or the fact that they produce champions.

Thumbs up

Here's just a few things off the top of my head.

"Gracies" is a much broader term than Machados. The Machados have different games among the 5 bros...but they all have the same basic flavor.

But the Gracies are so scattered..you can't even compare Ralph Gracie to Rorion Gracie..the two academies would be night and day just as one example.

The main rivalry you speak of, is between the Gracies of the Gracie academy and the Machados of greater Torrance..Rigan, John, and Jean Jacques.

Several years ago there was a tournament put on by Rorion in which he invited the Machados best students to compete against the Gracie academies best guys at the Gracie academy. Out of like 30 matches total, the Machados won 28. They cleaned house.

Some of the differences you would experience training both places would be that the Machados don't follow a definate pattern of techniques to start beginners on. You could learn the latest sidecontrol escape your first day.

The machados are big on teaching you to personalize your game, and take a good deal of time helping you identify your strengths and fighting mentality.

The gracies would pretty much tell you to fight like Helio or you're not doing jiu-jitsu.

The Machados also incorporate alot more wrestling into everypart of their curriculum. This tends to make them much better at takedowns than their Gracie counterparts.

Traditionally the Gracies, especially Helio, are credited with the development of the guard..but its the old school guard designed for old school vale tudo. Mainly closed, with lots of collar chokes and armlock attempts. The machados have a MUCH more aggressive approach to the guard and emphasize alot more spider guard and butterfly guard stuff.

Not that these are solid facts..I'm sure there are great open guard players at Rorions' but in general this is the emphasis.

In the gracie academies favor..depending on your own focus I guess...Rorions academy tends to relate most of their information to street/vale tudo...even though they wear the gi all the time. Rorion even has his own octagon in the main upstairs training area.

The Machados on the other hand, tend to stay pretty much focused on sport jiu-jitsu.

Lastly, you'll find infinitely more leg locks taught and practiced at the Machado schools. Also a bit more no gi emphasis.

Just a few contrasts for ya there.
