How important are privates in Bjj?

Does anyone there take private lessons? If so, did the private lessons substantially elevate your game? On the flip side is there anyone out there that feels that they have made real progress without ever taking a private? My instructor says that the only way to fine tune your game and to find your own game is with privates.

I don't take private as I do not accept the fact that you should pay extra money for extra attention.
I mean if the instructor is genuine about teaching BJJ as a profession, he should not have double teaching standards. e.g quicker promotion for privates students.
If you are a hard/loyal etc.. working student, the instructor will find ways to 'elevate' your game, why 'privates'?
It does not matter how many privates you paid for if you still get tap out every 25 secs by your average BJJ dude: the only way to get better is to roll with everybody as much possible.
Privates are good if you need to work on your basics as most intructors try to mix advanced and beginners together, you get to miss a lot basics stuff at the start.
But well if you want to get in his good book, you might as well pay the money!

Private lessons are great for learning and advancing in rank especially when regular classes are to crowded as they usually are. However they are expensive. I guess the real question should be are they worth the price. One of my instructors uses a budy system where 2 people can take a private(semi-private) lesson togather and split the cost. maybe Others could ask their instructors about instituting a similar system.

Good point but..
It is like saying your master (meaning somone that care about your improvement) will put the dollar sign to it..
I think a single rate is fair as you paid for it at the first place for it, if she/he charge you extra it might mean his/her teaching is faulty at the first place..
As a consumer, should you pay twice for the same service really?
If your car needs to go back again to the garage for fixing, would you pay again?

I kinda agree with you. If instructors would have more classes with smaller amounts of students in each class that would eliminate the need for private lessons. I think some instructors are just trying to make max $$$. But on the other side of the coin instructors have to earn a living from tuition if they choose to tech full time as they will not be able to hold a job if all of their time is spent teaching. I think it is obvious which ones want to make a living and which ones want to get rich. Most of the high priced training that I have found is not as good as as moderatly priced training. I think private lessons should be priced reasonably and only given to students that really want and NEED the extra help.

Well, i think a 'professionnal' instructor is better thatn an amateur.
however, my master does not charge for some of his students: the one thar fight vale tudo.

Never mind the bad english and rap.
To get back to this topic:
1. Do your instructor offers private MA classes as an extra to the usual classes as a way to provide to better individual needs?
2. The private I am talking are NOT the classes that people are paying for because they are so busy/rich that they cannot attend the normal training hours but the privates classes that some teachers provide on top of the normal classes.
3. Will you pay for private if you had the opportunity?
4. I dislike private classe because I expect a good instructor should be able to teach without having to charge for extra? If the student needs extra attention, do your job correctly at the first place.
Because I compare it to a group of people paying to get a service, and then the teaccher trying to up-sell them an extra class because the instructor failed at teaching them as a group. People get to think, he will succeed by paying as an individual.
BUT on the other hand, I have met some of the earlier students from my club, their BJJ techniques are flawless/deadly accurate due to the fact that they were receiving private classes most of the time due to the lack of students.
