Some of you who read this may not be impressed or surprised, but as a new student of BJJ I was amazed.
Last week we had some open mat time following our class. We currently have a student at our school who start's at the nose tackle position in the NFL, he was a two time state heavyweight wrestling champion in high school and he was also a successful collegeiant (sp?) wrestler. The man, 310 lbs worth (whom is very respectful I might ad), wanted to roll some during the open mat. One of the men he rolled with was a young 22 year old green belt who is about 5'7 and maybe 160 lbs and that's probably pushing it, and that green belt made the guy tap. I totally believe in BJJ and that is why I invest my time and money learning it. But under the circumstances do any of you that has been in BJJ for awhile find this impressive as well? Godspeed to you all! |

It can happen. Yeah, its pretty impressive.
BJJ seems like a good compliment to wrestling. Its designed to work for the smaller, relatively weaker grappler since a good part of its moves assume that the stronger grappler or wrestler will get the top position. It uses leverage, just like wrestling but does not emphasize strength but using stronger parts of your body against the weaker parts. Royce Gracie tapped a 600 lb sumo wrestler named Akebono. That was impressive.

First of all I was under the impression theres no green belt in BJJ... so thats a lil wierd, second of all... hes in the NFL, he was a good wrestler, I highly doubt this "green" belt could make him tap... even if he wasnt a wrestler, do you know how strong that nose tackle is gonna be?... the 160 pounder wouldnt have had a chance, even if he was BJJ black belt vs NFL nose tackle with no MA experience. Either this is a lie, or guy let "green" belt win.

Tank abbot demonstrated a 650 lb bench press and one punch KOs (vs. John Matua, the 300lb Samoan) but has still been sub'd by guys like Taktarov, Severn, Mir, Frye, Kimo etc. Strength matters, but so does skill.

Amazing is throwing one of those giants to the ground! The thud they make is impressive!
Okay, making them tap is fun too...

Ok, I see how I was wrong a Black Belt would probably be able to take out the nose tackle, ... maybe... lol... but a GREEN BELT!... cmon...especially when the nose tackle was apparently a good wrestler. Oh and if you think 650 is a big benchpress (a lot more then mine)... look for the 900+ ones some powerlifters do... scccaaarrryyy...

There used to be a clip of him on bullshido performing it.
Google it.

I don't know about the green belt business, but I have no doubt that a grappler can tap most anyone who is unaware of submissions. His wrestling experience will help him much more than any muscle mass, and even there he won't know when he's in danger of being submitted until it's too late. Typically, a big guy new to submission grappling tries to overpower you - He charges in, ends up in your guard (wich he doesn't even recognize as a threat, much less try to escape), and while he's trying to stack or choke, you pass an arm for triangle or arm bar. I've probably done that to guys with 70+ pounds on me two dozen times. Of course, they then stay in class and three months later are exponentially harder to deal with .
