I've done a little reading here on the forum and have narrowed down my searches to two different MA's...BJJ and MT Kickboxing...I am aware that both of them are totally different and it would be good to take both, I would think that the MT would be good while you were standing, and then if it did go to the ground the BJJ would kick in...my question is, which do you recommend I take first?

If you're smaller, you might want to start off with BJJ, since being small obviously puts you at a disadvantage when it comes to striking... but then again, there are some pretty powerful strikers who are small. I don't think it matters too much, but I'm betting most people will tell you BJJ, because it has been so successful.

Yea i'm kind of a small dude...5'3" and about 150. Does BJJ protect against the kinds of strikes and kicks you would run into during a street fight? Or is it mostly about shooting in and taking them down to get them where you are more comfortable...on the ground.

Go visit the school, take a free lesson (if possible), and see how you like the instructors/coach. Also, it doesn't hurt if the walls are covered with pictures of people with big brass belts on ![]() |

I find that Grapplers with no top game .. learn strikes and it's off for them..
Learn how to stand up first and then work the floor.. I've boxed with alot of grapplers and they are clumzy stand up guys .. but dont get me wrong, BJJ is the best shit.. BJJ can defeat =boxing, muay thai, karate, etc.. Bjj can be defeated by = BJJ if you have a striking base you know how to dodge, duck, foot work to kicks and knees.. Sprawl .. ShootBoxe got the best fighters in my eyes cause there techniques specialize in beating the crap outta grapplers that try to play that spider guard shi.t ... Did you see that last pride.. Shogun rocked!

But get to anything close to your home and schedule as if you really want to make any progress, you gonna have to attend 3 times a week. A good club for me is one that is active on the competition level. MT box is well established and their club fighting record should speak for themselves. However for BJJ, it is a different story!

Not many people say both.Interesting.
Where can I get to anything close to your home and schedule as if you really want to make any progress you gonna have to attend 3 times a week?Compare that to a bad club for him or her is one that is active on the competition level. And well established and their club fighting record should speak for themselves is MT box. Your purpose is BJJ it is a different story. |

If you live in a big city like LA where there are martial art schools everywhere, I would look for the best school near you.
If you have a free schedule and a good bank account, well, you can train anywhere and do anything. But like most, we are tied down to our jobs, or school or lack of funds. So, if I were you, I'd look for the best school, one that you'll look forward to going every day. Even on the days you don't train, you'll have that urge to go. No matter what school you choose, if you get the fever or bug, you'll train hard and you'll get good, real good, in a very short time. Try it all and see what you like and you will make your choice very easily. it's like being in an ice cream parlor and you are asking people what flavor to choose from. Everyone has their own favorite but it might not be your own. Go in to each school and talk to the instructor, telll them what your goals are, and your expectations. Watch classes and talk to the students. Who you train with is just as important as the instructor. Take an introductory class and avoid signing any long term contracts that would lock you into a school and tie up your money. Should you decide to leave the school, it can be a legal nightmare. The bottm line is that you train for fun and enjoyment, so you've got to find a great place to train. |
