Once your brain realizes that "this is wrestling" and "this is Bjj", you should be fine. Wrestling has helped my takedown game alot. I actually have to say that my strongest game is probably my stand up.

![]() | u can learn alot of good grappling from highschool wrestling. if u can train in greco roman, the throws are almost identical to judo throws, but gi-less. awesome setups too, just like in judo/jui jitsu. highschool wrestlers compete all the time too. u are looking at competing in like 20 or more matches per season i think, in addition to all the practice. so thats alot of real good experience that is going to make u tough. your coach is also going to make u lift and do conditioning. its well worth your time. immagine if u really get into it and kept decent grades and go to college with a scholarship or something. also, if your on the highschool wrestling team and are buddies with wrestlers, nobodys gonna mess with u guys. |

![]() | It's not the wrestling team, wrestling season already ended. Im a senior so i cant really do it next year.... Its open wrestling, some wrestlers and the coaches and anyone who wants to go is welcome to. yeah so i went to it the whole having to be on my stomach the whole time kind of frustrated me, but other than that it was pretty cool, and i learned some stuff that i dont think i would have learned at my gym so i think im gonna keep going to it. Bjj is much more fun imo though. i might do some in college, just for conditioning and fun since it was pretty sweet. |

If you are just starting, you might want to find a 'club' type of group. If you don't have any experience and try to jump in with a college team you are likely to...well...it won't be pretty.

Training splits up into two weight groups: under 170 and 170 +. Try being at the lower ened to the 170 +, no experience, working with fellas in the 200 - 240 range who've competed in highschool. On the bright side, you learn very quickly... | |

![]() | I have been training in bjj for about 6 months and I am one of the newer guys in my class. I was starting to get a common injury that most newbies get, a sore wrist from tapping out so damn much . About a month ago 3 new people signed up, and i was verry happy and anticipated some ez tappins when I got to roll with these guys. unfortunately I soon found out that all of these guys are college wrestlers. These guys all are very quick and explosive. If we start in stand-up I have no chance against them. The only good thing is that they do not know anything about submissions, but they are able to get me in dominating positions. I have been able to catch them a few times in triangle chokes that I dont think they ever saw before. I am afraid that after a few months of training these guys will start learning some submissions and some defenses for submissions, and with their excellent takedown skills and riding ability I think I will be in trouble again. |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | GRAPPLING is good. High school players are good. University level players are down right difficult!

| Registered User | AGREED I've got some of the same issues as these college kids. me and my boys did a little HS wrestling and found it was pretty easy because we have been wrestling (grappling, not lame "WWF" stuff) in the back yard since i was like 8. Thing is, our tap-out matches last for DAYS because we cant really pull off the moves right and we dont know many of them. I wanna take judo this summer so me and my boys can get better training |

![]() | I would definitely stick with it. It will be worth it. All the wrestlers that i've sparred were very quick and powerful. They are good at making the most of awkward positions and can be downright frustrating to grapple. It seems like they know a reversal for every position. Then again, like someone said earlier, they often don't have the submissions down and they seem to hate the guard. |

| Registered User | I have friends that wrestle and i may wrestle next year. the throws/takedowns you learn are awesome, but after that there isn't much other than stuff you learn on your stomach. it's definately worth the workouts but there really isn't much BJJ etc. couldn't teach you. also most of the techniques you use in BJJ/MMA aren't allowed.
