all of the arts listed above are good for self defense. i personally prefer the jui jitsu derived arts like bjj, and judo because they are effective and they also teach u to use clothing to your advantage which really comes into play in real life.

I seperate MMA from self-defence. Allow me to explain.

I see MMA, as a sport where two individuals have trained to "do battle" one with the other, There is a ref, a corner man, ect... it can be stopped at any time. You can even hold the person in the guard for a long time.

Self-defence is a different scenario. True self-defence isn't pretty. Yes, it involves kicking and punching (we prefer palm strikes in self-defence over punching), but along with it you must bite (I'm talking about taking pieces of skin and meat off), rakes (with nails) across the eyes. Listen, this may sound ugly, but when you sit down with both the rape victim and the rapist (interviewed many), you find what makes them tick. You find out how to stop them. Then there is the mental preparation that would take to long to explain.
[
I]If I had to pick ONE style for MMA - I guess submission wrestling
Self-defence - Whatever happens - bite him, pez him (strong palm strike to the chin and pretend his head is a pEz dispenser), elbows, knees, kicks, hit them with the stick or rock you grabbed form the floor. [/I]

-BJJ is probably the best, the only one "better" if you want to call it that is Vale Tudo, which is BJJ without the Gi and they train with headgear and pads and practice striking while grappling. But that style wont do much good without a good BJJ foundation. So go with BJJ.

-Cakegirl, where do you train? What belt are you? how old are you? I train here www.armbar.net

Hmm for self defense I would have to say Submission Wrestling... but not "submission wrestling" which is actually just BJJ.

I mean Freestyle WRESTLING (takedowns, wrestling controls) and knowledge and use of submissions. (kinda like the Jiu Jitsu/Wrestling hybrid)

For MMA Id have to say BJJ.

The reason being while with submission wrestling you may know how to do both takedowns and submissions, the Jiu Jitsu guys will have more ground techniques and skills.

In MMA you can basically lie down and have them come to the ground, or even attempt a takedown, if you do this they will probably take you down or you will take them down, then your in your field.

I chose submission wrestling.

Freestyle wrestling + jujitsu/judo subs.

Freestyle wrestling is an awesome art...too bad I have to wait until school starts up to get back at it.

Wrestlers are the boxers of the grappling world.

Wrestling because my best memories stem from there and it helped get me away from my martial art illusions. Also either shooto or pancrase because they have striking on the ground and from the clinch so you do not to need to modify it for mma unlike the other arts mentioned. A lot of things in grappling change when you add striking.

30 seconds?????????????

By the way, you might want to consider typing in English for the benefit of those who don't read "Punk" very well.
