Default Just had a standup refresher...

wow was my standup game in the toilet...

I just took two 1 hour privates this last week to refresh my striking and striking defense. I was surprised how rusty I was. I have been working on my ground game for the last 9 months or so, and it's amazing how much you can forget.

Tim Mousel gave me very thorough (for 2 classes anyway) lessons in defending the jab, cross and left haymaker, and spent time helping me time my shot and working for the takedown. I hadn't been slipping punches for long months, and it showed ahaahahahah!!!!!

He also reminded me how much striking changes things, and proved to me how just covering up and shooting straight in on a good striker for the takedown can cause your ears to hurt for a while....

He also rained down punches on me while I had him in my guard. Really showed me how little time there is to look for a sweep or armbar or whatever when someone is pounding you about the head. HA!

BJJ'ers: take the time to work with someone that can strike well. It will really open your eyes (or close one of them if you're unlucky)!

I am committing to train standup at least once a month. Gi chokes and triangles are all great, but i've ignored kicking, elbowing, kneeing and punching for too long.

Discuss.

I got what he was saying.

I recently had an experience that would be sort of a mirror image of the aforementioned scenario. Last Tuesday at open gym, one of the past cage fighters and collegiate wrestler/bjj students at our gym asked me if I wanted to drill and spar mma. Of course I said yes because I have a keen interest in the grappling arts and wanted to practice my sprawling and takedown defense. Let me tell you I suck at anything that isn't striking. He was easily able to drive through my sprawls and get me down. from there it was game over. Once, somehow I got a full mount and while grappling cut him with an elbow that slipped through because of the sweat. Not cool since he has a fight in D.C. coming up. Anyway, to make a long story short, the next three drills involved me being picked up and slammed onto my upper back. I'll admit that after that I took of the grappling gloves and went over to a bannana bag.

I know how you feel because there are areas that I have serious defecits in. I need to study the ground game. BADLY

To my credit I was able to put my hand to his face at pretty much any time while we were horizontal. Doesn't work on the ground though.
