Another year is gone, I'm just older, maybe wiser.

It's time to question ourselves, who are we?

I consider myself a part of a great family, rooted in Honor, Pride, Strenght and Integrity.

Forged by pain, effort, dedication and passion.

Shaped by love, compassion, humbliness and wisdom.

Sometimes we are depicted as violent, rageous, angry individuals, after all, we are learning to fight.

To go to war.

So, who are we?

I see the answer just everyday, just walking on the streets.

I see it in the black eye of a young woman, a paper grocery bag in hand, eyes downward thinking about a drunk husband...

I see it in the trembling steps of a elderly man, fighting to see the end of the mont with the government susside.

I see it in the face of a ugly young woman, who think that nobody will date her.

I see in the tears of a child, in a soccer playground, bullied by fellow players.

I saw it in my mother's eyes, when some drunk insulted her at our shop, and she joked with me to keep me happy.

I wished I would have had only an ounce of her strenght...

And then, the answer would come.

We are learning to protect,

to retaliate, just in cause.

To not be overcome.

To keep our heads above the sh!t, even if we smell it everyday...

To ever, ever protect the weak.

And teach the ignorant, the unwise.

To help the unlucky.

To make things better, cause the world is full of horrors that we must not repeat "Nunca Mās", as some mothers and Grannyies have cried in A Square Place far away, held at gunpoint by cowards fighters.

I wish I would have only a fraction of their courage.

To all of you who are learning the real craft, I bow to you and I must tell:

It is a Honor to be a part this.

To be in the same family.

The one of the fighters.

Happy new year,

UNDERDOG

Even in my inebriation, I share your sentiments. Don't listen to the nay-sayers. You are on the right track.

Cool

Underdog,
I just got back, and I have to admit that it is refreshing to see that. Placing "protection" with "fighter" is something I have always been about, and always cheer for.
I'm always extremely happy to see that. Think of it this way, wherever you go someone will have a friend or a protector, and without sounding to comic book characterish, that is what real fighting is about.
Extremely awesome post, thank you.

WIAG...I feel kind of sorry for you

Ryu

Ultimately, i think that somewhat destiny put the right tool at our disposition, it's up to ours to decide their use.

It's damn too easy to be cruel, but there's no HONOR in that.

Back when I was a soldier I lived in a environment where, even at our basic level, cruelty was encouraged, and the submission of the weak was common. A tool where the strongest (in a twisted sense) would be gauged in order to fulfill government needs. Back then I was embedded in Right-wing activism and dumb shit like that, it was when I saw with my eyes what would be to be cruel with the weaks, that I left that ideology forever.

Back then I was part of Italian Shock Troops "Bersaglieri"; Recon Platoon Third Company 183° RGT armoured infantry in Cape Teulada (Any leatherneck with large-scale infantry maneuver in mediterrean area around here?). That group is famous arond armed forces to do everything ON THE RUN, I mean we did every drill running. I don't know how it had happened but I found at boot camp a GUMP guy, I mean, this guy had one leg one inch shorter than the other, He must have had rejected for active duty for first place, let alone SF. We started running and this guy limped and stumbled everywhere, I screamed to the sergeant "Are you blind? This is GUMP, damn you!" the sergeant didn't care a sh.t and continued to make the guy run, with the help of kicks and blows. I engaged the guy and was put to sleep down for good. Later on I did CPR (prison) for insubordination. Huge change of viewpoint.

Later on the sarge was KO'ed by aid of a flying brick from a window... I was indicted but not found guilty.

Here I witnessed brutality act almost daily, "Grandfathers" were soldiers that did had little time to serve, and they BRUTALIZED new enlisted at their will. Back in the late '80s it was a national plague here, the shame of our armed forces. I personally witnessed the shooting of a guy in the leg because he refused to dance naked in the rain. I stopped two guys in the bathroom area trying to submerge a "rocket" (f.ucked new guy) in escrements, and did get slashed with a blade in the barracks dining room.

I witnessed the suicide of a young guy, that hanged himself to a tree outside our barrack, I personally put him down from here. I witnessed guys fracturing their arms to get licenses to leave, myself too have cut my forehead badly headbutting a wall after a four month period without a single permit to leave the base...

That had put to test all my beliefs about the use of force.

I'm very PROUD that I left my tour of duty as a squad leader, respected and loved, and with the great HONOR of knowing that NOT A SINGLE SOLDIER had suffered because of me.

So my reply to WIAG is: I understand you well, I was just like you, very, very long ago, Cynical, provocative.

I wish that you will understand things without seeing all the sh.it I've seen.

On one thing I think you are correct, I bitch often.

Hmmm, consider it my cheap psycotherapy....

I really cannot afford a psychoanalist....

Happy New Years YeLLa

Underdog,
I never knew. The immense background you have is really inspirational. To go through what you went through and come out with a hero's view point, wanting to protect the weak, and give kindness to people is possibly one of the truest forms of heroism I have heard about.
I really admire what you are standing for, and don't ever think you are alone in that.
And you think women don't want you and you have low confidence about yourelf?? Doesn't fit, my friend.
I think what you have posted here is incredibly chivalrous, and something we all look up to. Not many would disagree.
As far as the women issue...bah don't get wrapped up in losers who want you simply for looks. Search for the one who wants her knight.

Take care, buddy.
Have a great New Year!

Ryu
