Default Injuries

I was wondering if anybody here got injured doing their specific art. I was talking with a kid at work last night and we were talking about how I'd like to do UFC eventually (probably won't happen but I can dream can't I) and he said how dangerous it is and how it's so easy to get injured. But I was thinking about it and I think that it wouldn't have that high of injury considering the people there are very experienced with what they do and they know how to do their stuff. Also, for the most part, they know when to submit. But I would imagine that the beginners get injured more than the advanced students. So basically, back on track, have you got injured doing your art and if so what happened?

I had Ligment damage to the wrist which required survey, common injury in boxing and MT when hitting heavy bag etc.

broken collarbone in a competion due to landing badly after a heavy throw.

Injuries are rare, but if you compete and train regulary year in year out, you should expect them

Broken hand
Broken Zyhoid process
Stitches on my lips a couple times
Two torn hamstrings
Face was numb on one side for 6 months due to nerve damage
sprained ankles
Dislocated fingers.

I'm sure i'm forgetting a few.

Why would you think that you wouldn't get a few injuries by getting in the ring and letting people do their best to try to injure you?

If you love what you're doing, the benefits outweigh the risks.

Your body is going to fail you someday regardless of whether you fight or not, it's just nature. Fighting will probably speed up the rate of wear and tear, but with proper nutrition it can be dramatically reduced (fish oil, antioxidants, etc).

My injuries.....
Broken pinky - football
Torn ligaments in ankle - football
Sprained knee - football
Hyperextended elbow - Jiu-Jitsu
Tiny fracture in neck - Jiu-Jitsu
Pinched nerve in Elbow - Judo

what was your injury? what were you doing when it occurred? how long ago was it, what steps did you take to treat it?

I've had problems before but without more info I don't know what to tell you.

From my KravMaga/Grappling:

Chipped Teeth from uppercut
Neck pain for 3 days after class, dont know what youd call that.
Numerous cuts/bruises.
Dislocated Shoulder after a nasty throw grappling.
I've had my teeth go through my lips.
Pulled my hamstring pretty good too.
Nothing too bad really.

BadgerFU57 put football.

So ill throw in a broken arm DH mountain biking, a concussion from DH mountain biking, a broken arm playing basketball (go figure), and a few other minor injuries from football.

It's all worth it, life would not be worth living if I couldnt mountain bike or fight.

Injuries happen in every sport! You name it, it happened! Zapista, I guarantee, you will get injuries, but where do you want to go! Do not let the fear of an injury keep you from your goals. I am injured right now, but this to shall pass. I wanted to go to two tournament, but I'm going to have to wait for months until I compete. I train carfully, but no one is perfect, accidents will happen. Let's make a deal, (anyone that wants in). Let's train for the next 2 to 4 years with the goal of competing in the UFC. What do you think? Are you in? If not UFC at least something like it! Give me ideas of other events.

This is the major problem I see with folks that think they want to fight. Mindset. You have in your mind a vision of yourself as the victim being KO'd in record time. Turn that around first and the rest is easy. YOU'RE the guy that's going to KO your victim in the ring. If it doesn't happen to set a record, so what? Maybe it will!

Why train hard with a mindset of a victim you will never win... Train harder than that guy that wants your head, be prepared to win.

^^^ Umm I think he was kinda making a joke, and to avoid me starting to flame him being like "I COULD KICK YOUR ASS YOU LITTLE WIMP!" (which I wouldnt do anyway, I realize its the internet and he could be some crazy fighter for all I know). He simply said "I would be the one getting knocked out"

I think its just a joke, I really want to do some MMA, but I gotta settle for grappling contest in november, which I plan on winning.

NO STRIKES OF ANY KIND.. its a downer... but its still a good competition to enter..

What's your competition experience Tant01?

Also, some people do better with different mindsets. I prefer to go in expecting to lose so I don't feel any pressure. When I go in thinking I should win I have 2 problems A) I don't train as hard B) I get ten times more nervous which = adrenaline dump which = quick fatigue.

you become what you think about most.

so if you view yourself a loser long enough and hard enough you will eventually be.

Do you also picture your life like this?

I want and ugly wife, 16 kids who hate me, steal from me, and will eventually kill me. I will be poor and own nothing working 18 hours a day for next to nothing only to come home to my ugly wife who hates me who is doing her pimp when I walk in the door.

Becareful what you aim for you might get it.
