There is an expression in Muay Thai which goes like this: "You'll find your belt in the ring". Belt systems are for maintaining order back at the gym but they don't make much sense in a competition.

The most common styles trained for MMA are Brazilian Ju-Jitsu and Muay Thai. Other common backgrounds are boxing, wrestling, judo, 'kickboxing', pretty much any ring sport.

It should be pointed out however, that all the styles are modified for the format. You don't see Muay Thai in an MMA arena, what you see are the elements of muay thai which work well under the ruleset.

You'll occasionally hear during the anouncement right before the fight that somebody has a black belt in Brazilian Ju-Jitsu and one of the fighters in the show Ulitmate Fighter had a black belt in BJJ (I forgot his name though). But other than BJJ I haven't seen anybody having a belt in another art.

there was a fight i watched where a guy had a black belt in judo. he embarrassed the other guy by throwing him on his face every two seconds. the announcers said its getting more rare to see a guy in the cage built on judo. they always say so n so has a bbj blackbelt though.

-kenny florian has a black, i think stephen bonner does too. Usually the announcer says "expert" in whatever art, whatever that means,. they should say the belt color, which means everything, in BJJ especially

i love to see judo as well, even though it is rare.

it makes me smile to see kick boxers get flipped and twisted and thrown all over the place.

If the belt color means everything then why have fights? Just compare belts and call the winner...
