Question

I have some extra money saved up, and I want to get my hands on the Sperry tapes everyone is talking about.
I mentioned something about grappling up against a wall, and Tony10 asked if I had seen the Mario Sperry tapes where he goes into this strategy in detail.
I haven't seen them, and only know of the strategy through experience. But, I want these tapes. I have heard he covers very street-wise Brazilian jiu-jitsu.

My question is...which of his series covers these things in question? He has a couple sets out, and I want to get the right ones. Which sets goes over street BJJ, and standing grappling on the street?

get Vale tudo set 1 & 2. I got them and they are great. I'd also look at getting Recardo Da Laveria's tapes too.

Post standing

specifically, the standing stuff is laid out in the takedown tapes: #1 & #7.

i wish my old judo instructors had taught me that stuff back in the '70s, it woulda saved me some headaches.

Ryu, I don't think the Vale Tudo #1 and 2 are what you are looking for, BUT they are some pretty good tapes with some very simple and easy to use stuff to learn and work with.

The grappling arts imply most fights end up on the ground. The striking arts imply all fights start standing up. The clinching arts imply the clinch can stop the striker from striking, and the grappler from taking it to the ground. The weapon arts imply the they can stop the unarmed man. A complete martial art implies any fight can go anywhere...be ready and able to go everywhere.

Well I guess I (we) should be specific, Ryu. While a lot of what he covers is very good for the street, technically the tapes are for Vale Tudo fighting (no gi, for NHB-type events). A lot of it transfers easily to the street, but it is not a streetfighting tape.

And that standing virtual mount is one of the very few times he's on his feet in the series (although it is such a great idea).

Depending on how far along you are, you may already know a lot of the stuff. Although, one great thing about the set is he shows you a lot of the BJJ 101 stuff that doesn't work if you're not fighting tournament style, with a gi or against a knowledgable opponent. And he's kinda funny.

The most in-depth summary of these tapes you'll find is at http://www.bjj.org in the reviews section. This guy goes over them painstakingly, and it was based on this review that I bought them (and was not disappointed).

One other note: When I bought the set, they included a 10 minute or so sampler of the set, which featured scenes from throughout. If you watched the sampler and decided the tapes didn't look like what you wanted, you could return them for refund as long as they were unopened. Once you open them, you own them. I thought that was a nice touch.

Tony10,
Awesome. Thank you very much for the link and the detailed post. I appreciate it.
I'll make sure to check out the reviews.

Ryu,
You probably already know this-if you order from the WMA ad in the magazines you can get both Vale Tudo 1&2 for $400.
I don't see the same deal on their website.
