I usually don't like to brag about who I've trained with, but one of the biggest ones... well, the story goes like this:

So I jump ship in Hong Kong and make my way over to Tibet, and I get on as a looper at a course over in the Himalayas. A looper, you know, a caddy, a looper, a jock. So, I tell them I'm a pro jock, and who do you think they give me? The Dalai Lama, himself. Twelfth son of the Lama. The flowing robes, the grace, bald... striking. So, I'm on the first tee with him. I give him the driver. He hauls off and whacks one---big hitter, the Lama---long, into a ten-thousand foot crevasse, right at the base of this glacier. Do you know what the Lama says? Gunga galunga... gunga, gunga-galunga. So we finish the eighteenth and he's gonna stiff me. And I say, "Hey, Lama, hey, how about a little something, you know, for the effort, you know." And he says, "Oh, uh, there won't be any money, but when you die, on your deathbed, you will receive total consiousness." So I got that goin' for me, which is nice.

Unhappy Your welcome

Badger,

I'm not meaning to be impressive, just answering your question.
Maybe other people should try to answer it a little more civilised or not answer you at all eh!

Anyway, hope it helped.

Ian,

It's all cool-the others are just having fun.

I was just curious to see what kind of experience everyone has.

Default Training

Ian,

Very cool list. It'd be interesting to hear how you would describe different fighters, and describe to us "amatuers" how big the gap is between professionals and "weekend warriors."

The people i've met/trained with (I use that term loosely, since most were on business trips of 1 or 2 weeks)
are:

-Rey Diogo
-Marcelo Alonso (for the last 2 hours of a seminar!)
-Jacare
-Royce
-Rickson
-Lou Vintoloro (Royler Purple Belt)
-Dan Inosanto
-Erik Paulson

In no particular order...

-Scott Morris, Ninjitsu--taught me how to block elbows using my face

-Orlando Weit, kickboxing--Orlando thought it was better to use your head for this

-Emmanuel Yarborough, Sumo--"Manny," as we called him, thought elbows were too dangerous and you should only use your face to block PUNCHES. Manny also made great BBQ. A LOT of it.

-Kimo, Tae Kwan Do (yes they called him TKD in UFC III)--we all genuinely liked the K-man. I'll never forget after he fought that Gracie guy and he came in the dojo the next day... with a haircut.

-Ron Van Clief, Goju Karate--sifu Ron always reminded us that striking wins fights; you can't be taken down if you're quick enough

-Ranger Stott, R.I.P.--The Stotter knew some BJJ, and he invented his own version of knee-on-stomach which he called "Rodilla en Cara," which translates to "Knee on Face."

-Joe San, Jo San Do--although pint-sized, Papa San sure could carry a full-scale cross with the best of them. The warm-ups for that class were a bitch... YOU try running laps on the mat with 80 pounds of wood!

-John Matua, Kapu Kuialua--not a lot of people know about this marital art, which involves fruitlessly pawing the air in front of your face after you've been KO'd. Of course, this just to lull your opponent into a false sense of security, after which you can then pounce!

Big names? Sure. I could go on, but it's not the Big Names that matter, it's heart, guys. You can talk style or attributes, but hell: in the end, you're navel-gazing.

There's millions of us out there with a little knowledge and a whole lotta... more... um, little knowledge. And that's what makes us great. Sure, some people call us "cannon fodder," but you can't keep a burning fire like that down. I see too much fractionalizing, too much parochialism, too many statements like "My sifu has actually sparred more than once." I mean, are you going to sit there and bellyache, or you going to jump on board!

Join the team.

Come on in for the Big Win.

Who's with me!
