Default Capoeira

i guess no good pysical activity can hurt your MA skills, but Capoeira seems a little wierd. its like a breakdance with some handstands and kicks thrown in, i dont understand weather it values itself as a martial art, or if anyone wins fights by doing the coffee grind in a certain way... i wold love to see a Capoeira practicioner fight, it seems interesting (though not logical or practical... i mean, you cant expect to be able to do some huge dance involving flips and barrel rolls and stuff wherever there is physical conflict. Although i guess people have guns if they really want to defend themselves... so is Capoeira a tribal dance more than a MA?

facts/oppinions welcome.

Firstly, let me start with I LOVE CAPOEIRA!!! I haven't been doing it long, but I've been around it for years.

In Capoeira, they acknowledge the martial root of their art, but I doubt any sensible Capoerista would use a cartwheel kick in self-defence. That said, there are non-sensible people in all arts, and I know I saw one article in a martial arts mag about "defending yourself with a smile" with some stupid girl showing how you can backflip out of a confrontation with an attacker.

So mostly it's done for fun, discipline, building strength and flexibility, and - er - all the hot people there... HAHAHAHAHA! Sorry, I had to add that - the guys and girls who've been doing Capoeira for a while are so buff and athletic!!!

Capoeira seems cool and a great workout; something to add if you want to change up your fitness.

I've sparred a few Capoeria people who think that they can effectively use a barrel roll in a fight. It's a simple matter of timing and it's pretty much over for them.

Thumbs up

When Capoeira was used for street combat in Rio around the turn of the last century, clubs, daggers, switchblades, and straight razors were used to supplement the art. It's kind of like those silat forms that don't make any combative sense until you place a knife or a kerambit in the hands of the practitioner.

Modern Capoeria of course has been "sanitized" to a degree, but is, as others have said, great for attribute development - the agility required is great for specialized BJJ moves - star passes etc. Not anything you would be likely to use on the street, but great for sport BJJ.

Besides that, in what other martial art do you sing and play musical instruments? It's a beautiful expression of Brazilian culture.

"In Capoeira you don't try to beat the shit out of your opponent. The other one is not your enemy, he is your friend, and both of you try to keep the game going." I can't reccomend this martial art to defend yourself but it may help you pic up hotties like cakegirl.

Whenever I see capoeira fighters in those jean claude van damme movies they eventually gets their asses kick, so it can't be good.

thats pretty much it.

btw, i dont know much about capoiera but werent the core capoiera techniques pretty good for actual self defense? i mean, it was good enough that the slaves had to preserve it by hiding the techniques in a dance. also it originates from africa, not brazil doesn itt? african slaves brought it to brazil and taught it to people there. i doubt u would find many people nowdays who teach true hardcore capoeira for self defense, but at one time thats what it was for. nowdays its more about taking part in a something that has much tradition and cultural heritage.

I'm pretty sure it's just because I have "girl" in my name... Only one forum member has met me in real life, and one is about to, so for all you other guys, I could very well be a 600 pound middle-aged man.

Default hey, cakegirl

Well I don't know what you look like, but the girl you grappled with who's pic was on here looked cute, she looked kinda mean though, so I wouldn't want her to put me in heel hook for trying to hit on her. Anyway put a pic up here of you and we'll be the judge, if not put one on hot or not.com, I'm on there and my highest rating was 6.9, b.s. clearly I'm a 7 but WHAT EVER!!!!(I just hope it's women rating me on there and not a buch of gays )
So let us be the judge if you're a hottie or not
