Default What exactley happens during a knock out?

What happenes to the brain during a knock out? How harmful can it be? Does anyone know about the effects of brain damage for fighters? Thats the one drawback about this sport.

I'm no authority on knock outs or science but I read this yesterday which seem to make a bunch of sense to me.

I saw some show where they side everytime you get hit, your brain kinda short circuits for a second , (electrons going through the brain remember).

If you get hit hard enough, or enough of them in a row... it woont... "stop"... but it kinda.... goes haywire for a bit, and you get knocked out... kinda... a sorta dumb explanation but I dont know it any better.

Been hit in the head too many times I guess...

and it is bad for you... but who cares...

I been KO'd many times, not from fights, but from motorcycle crashes. You smack your head hard and all goes black, no pain at all, until you open your eyes, you dont know how long you been out and you have THE WORST headache ever imaginable and it wont go away......I guess your brain gets bruised. And you see "stars" circling around like in the cartoons, this time however, its not at all funny........I never knew they existed, those that have seen them know, and they arent the ones that you see all over the place when you do shoulder rolls, they are in a circle rotating around

Risk of serious injury to other parts of your body is just as real. Don't blow brain damage out of proportion.

There are technically two kinds of "KO"...

More common is the brain bouncing inside the skull causing the temporary shutdown of motor functions, the more dangerous (?) is a cervical knockout caused by rotational or lateral acceleration on your neck bones or in the case of the dreaded overhand right what results is functionally a compression of the vertebra that can result in instant death or paralysis. These KO's take many weeks to heal where mild concussions can heal in a few days. (But you should always get professional advise when it comes to your health!)

Repeated blows to bounce the brain severly or repeatedly is BAD NEWS too! Death from brain trauma is rare in the MA. Broken bones and bad joints are more common.
