Default how long do you roll?

hey all

just a quick question, how long do you guys roll per lesson?

is it better to roll long in say 1 or two classes (30 minutes or more)

or to roll short in say 3-4 classes (10-15 minutes per class)

what do you think?

I think sometimes it's good to roll for longer, especially if you have some inexperienced or aggressive guys who aren't relaxing. After 6 or 7 minutes they have no choice but to forget strength & try using technique more. I like ten minute rounds before switching partners.

Also IMHO rolling for longer helps to avoid the "I've gotta win" mindset - it gets to a point where you stop counting points & start playing with techniques & escapes. Those who score a tap, then hold onto topmount until the bell learn nothing.

Of course there's always the odd aggressive grappler who's also fit. Now that's a different ballgame...

My class is about 1/2 hour for warmup and takedown drills, 1/2 hour to learn the a new technique and practice it slowly as well as at full speed after.. Then the last 1/2 hour we roll.. We usually go for 6 minutes and then switch partners.. I can only go like 2 times in a row and then i need to rest and them im good for another 6 mins..

I like rolling longer as opposed to only having like 15 mins to roll because I think it builds up your endurance. Also in the beginner classes which are only an hour at my class they usually roll only about 15 mins.. Its kind of nice sometimes because I get to take a break that day its not as physically demanding as the mixed belt classes..

if i had a choice i would roll all day long. in classes we usually roll for 30 mins, in small groups always switching partners, usually about 6 mins per round. I personally would love to just get on the mat with a guy and go for submissions for an hour or so, this is what i do on the lawn with my friends sometimes, it allows me to adapt to being dead tired, and to keep my technique strong even when my body is not. it also builds endurence as someone else said.

Yeah I like rolling with with different people.. It gives you the chance to adapt to different body types and styles.. If I could have my way in class I would roll all day.. Do a quick warm up and learn a new technique and then roll for the rest of the time..

We roll for about 5-7 minute rounds... and about 45 minutes of rollng... a class.. maybe less im not sure, it depends.

Id like it if the rounds were longer, I used to be the strong freak out kid... and it did work... but know im just the sit back try not to get tapped and wait for an opening... I'm not even tired after I roll like.. 4 times in a row.

If im going against a higher belt , lol any belt except white, or anyone clearly better than me, I wait it out , attempt somethings, but I try not to get tapped, with people near my skill level I wait it out, look for mistakes/ openings, try something and if it works than I attack.
