Default Dirty boxing and knees

read an interasting article in for fighters only mag about different of db and clinching one thing though kneeing people in mma has never made much sense to me for a few reasons
1. the knee is very fragile so raming into someones skull is crazy to me and kneeing someone in the face me be good, but what if you knock their teeth out do you want bloody teeth cutting your knee(got bit on the hand and chest once while bouncing and got an infection) so maybe just da jaw
2. if you're not supposed to high kick because of the off balaencing/take down issues in mma, then why risk someone grabing your kee (when doing knees to the body) and doing a nice intentional slam to injure??????

all good points, with only one flaw to the arguement which is that knees have been tried and tested and have proved to be very effective,

I would think when kneeing it is particularly harder to get a hold of it like you would a lanky kick.

Knees are fragile if you hit them at the side... laterally your knees are weak, but in a linear move, backwards than forwards your knees are very strong.

Im a big fan of knees, they are definetly a tried tested and true effective weapon, sure theres a downside to them , but theres a downside to every technique...

haha... stupid clown hair Josh Koschek got beaten.. .and he totally owned the guy the whole fight... haha...

I saw that and I laughed. I told my friend (I was at his house watching it, since I don't have cable) that he deserved to lose because his hair annoyed me.

WHAT?!
dude....I would dearly love to demonstrate how wrong that argument is, but I think you'll find out in time. (not too many MMA guys know how to throw good knees, though. look to the few that do, pele landi, vanderlei, people from a muay thai background...can easily split somebodies dome with a knee. To the top of the head...eh...you don't even do the same damage (unless you generate enough force to cause axial loading, or hit the brain box or some shit at the back of the occipital lope), in the clinche you try for their face.)

Default Choose your target

You know, fighting is alot like shooting ...its all about the target placement.

Yeah, a knee can split your head open, but the knee cap is very fragile if you hit it the wrong way. But so is a fist. We've all seen jaws get broken and wounds get opened up on the head from fists, but I've also seen many knuckles get dislocated, wrists dislocated and sprained, and fingers broken from punching with a fist.

Its about the right tool for the right job. A knee to the solar plexus is a devastating blow, and safe for the knee. The groin as well. One of my personal favorites is a knee to thigh as an entry strike. But unless you're kneeing the face or the back of the head at the base of the neck, then I agree that a knee to the head could potentially be dangerous to the knee itself.

With so much soft tissue area to strike, why would you pit bone against bone anyway? Even if you didn't feel the effects of hitting bone right away, you're heading for serious arthritis if you make it a habit. Alot of masters can't walk by the age of 50 because of some of the old, macho conditioning routines that they practiced in order to have "iron" knees, shins and feet.

I have a closely related question for the MMA'ers here:

When I watch MMA (I'm coming from a Muay Thai background with BJJ, but very little takedown), I see constant opportunity for knees - BIG knees. Seems like these guys are always getting in clinches with their arms up and their bellies/ribs exposed. In a Muay Thai rules bout, if you let your belly get exposed like that you are looking at some real hurt real fast.

Are most MMA'ers just not very hip to straight knees?
Or is there some takedown risk I don't see?

It seems to me a solid straight knee would be worth some takedown risk... comments?

I'm with you!! It seems like all the time watching mma I'm like "KNEE KNEE KNEE!!!! and it almost never happens. When it does it ussually works though, based on what I've seen.

Maybe there is a lot of off balancing and control that we can't really see that affects things.

Everyone should watch...

Vitor Belfort vs Marvin Eastman...

and

Rampage vs Vanderlei Silva #2...

than we can discuss knees....

and for the person who said... why knee to the face when there are softer targets you can hit...

well because one knee to the face can knock the guy out, or set you up to finish the fight, ala koschek....

whats worse for your body.. kneeing a guy in the head, or repeated knees to other tragets... along with getting hit in the head more... etc...
