Before I talk about this, i'd prefer to know how many people here can perform or are familiar with 'dead weight' attacks and blocks.
i think it is an incredibly effective method of attack and defense. i'd like to talk about it though and explain why i think it has a place in the ring, and i'd love to hear other people's stories and opinions. -J

reminds me of something I used to do as a kid. find the biggest, strongest kid in the class, latch on and just go limp. They wouldn't be able to move...which gave me time to scrape their scalp with my knuckles...hehehe.

anyone ever consider launching your entire body -literally- behind your punch, like pushing off with both legs maybe a meter and a half from the target (or one if it's more efficient) and simultaneously bringing your punch around so you still have your entire body flinging towards the opponent while the punch lands a puches right through his face? Meanwhile bringing your legs up under you so you land perfectly assuming you have practiced adequatley?
uh...what? |

Speed. Penetration. Accuracy. Complete limpness in the arm. These factors result in an incredibly powerful punch. Instead of the punch damaging from the skin to muscle to organs and then bone, dead weight works it way from the inside out. It's like it explodes inside of you. I was at a seminar with my master and he was demonstrating some dead weight on one of our instructors. He struck him in the chest with what he said was just the weight of his shoulder to his fingertips, and it sounded like he punched an old drum. Adam, who was being applied to let out a choking noise and his eyeballs looked like they were about to burst. It wasn't until a week and a half after the bruise worked it's way to the surface. Consider the damage if he would have put his entire body weight into it, increased the speed, and choose a point a foot or so behind who he was applying on to penetrate to. -J

I also considered (not saying it would be viable given the fast pace of fights) is when you throw the deadweight of your entire body behind the punch, what about when throwing a cross, for example, you rotate your body around so the stance is switched and your entire body has rotated roughly 180 degrees with the punch, putting it all the way through.

I think it's important to look at martial arts scientifically, but it one should also consider the higher art forms and take into consideration that there are men far greater than ourselves. Like the old masters. Even in karate. Wasn't it Gogen Yamaguche who would pick large rocks from the ground and crush them with his fist? Or George Dillman's pressure point attacks? We all know some stories. Some are exaggerated, but we know some that aren't... I'm not naive when it comes to martial arts. I know there is a lot of crap out there and I've had to deal with it first hand walking into new martial arts schools, going to seminars, and even flipping through a copy of BlackBelt Magazine, but I think that all of us who are martial artists -- we don't just practice martial arts -- know that we are capable of some very powerful things. It should also be taken into consideration that dead weight doesn't initially damage surface tissue that much. Because the weight is limp, the fist's or palm's or whatever's energy is traveling through the object it's contacting and damaging the inside. For example, if you are to lay your palm down flat on a table and stike it with your other hand, it probably won't hurt unless you really hammer it. Now do the same thing in the air. There is a medium between. This is similar to how dead weight damages a person. -J
