ive spent some time doing judo. my best advice is not to waste your time with it. if your looking for standing grappling youll do much better with japanese ju-jitsu (ive also done that one). the techniques work better, flow better and can actually be used against a hostile opponent. judo gives you problems when they really dont want to be thrown to the floor. bear in mind that judo is a watered down version of ju-jitsu in most cases... if you can find a judo clu which teaches it as jigaro kano intended, youll do well there. if there is such a club itll be in japan. english judo is regulated by the bjc or bja (might have letters wrong, been a couple of years) which removes its effectiveness.
then again, i left grappling for muay thai and have never looked back, what works for me may not work for you. beware bad judo clubs.... |

with an opponent uncleanly, they just turtle up and stall. And yeah... what was with the helicopter in the wheat field? But that chick in the San Jose video is pretty hot.

how can you say that judo doesnt work against someone who doesnt want to go down when the whole idea of judo is to throw someone doing their darndest not to be thrown!? doesnt work against a hostile opponent?? have you seen the olympic judo, those guys are working their asses of not to be thrown and yet they still get taken down because of good technique, skill and power.
from what ive seen judo is just as effective for standing grappling as olympic/collegiate wrestling |

'Cause most of these scrubs commenting here have seen as much good judo as they have olympic/collegiate wrestling, which is to say none.

I'm down with judo. Some bjj guys I know compete and dominate in judo they come from good strong judo backgrounds aswell. The thing I dislike is the judo guys who run the tournaments give people with judo backgrounds advantages over bjj guys. For example a bjj guy I know submitted a guy but then the judge had then stand up and start over. Anyway judo is great go for it.

i respect aspects of judo and i dont think that any legit places teach blatantly ineffective moves, not to mention the word effective is not concrete, judo may not work for a tall guy, but if the other guy is tall as well it just might. i think many good lessons can be pulled form judo, and it has legit aspects outside it's sport, i see some good judo in the ufc now and then, not as prevolantly as bjj (maybe im just assosiating judo with judo takedowns, and not giving it any credit for groundwork, which it certainly has plenty of, though maybe it is not stressed as much as groundwork gets stressed in your average bjj place). I'n fact, I saw a sweet judo takedown in one of those fights last monday on 'spike tv'. the guy with the red hair from "the ultimate fighter season 1" faught some guy whose nickname was "babyface". Though babyface lost by an armbar, her had a SLICK side-stepping takedown, did anyone else see it? i loved it!
