We dont reely practise the gaurd at my school. My teacher says its better to no throws and standing submissions thant to go to the grounbd in a street fight. Also for judo contests its better to know standing Judo.

Hey Dan, you practice at the SBG or an affiliate, right? Maybe with Steve Boyd?

Robin Hood, if Dan does train with those guys, don't pass up the opportunity to kick it (pun intended) with tose guys. The Straight Blast Gym philosophy is truly a winning one that can only make one a better person and fighter/practicioner.

If he's not from the SBG or affiliate, than I don't know. Take a pocket knife just in case...just kidding.

The grappling arts imply most fights end up on the ground. The striking arts imply all fights start standing up. The clinching arts imply the clinch can stop the striker from striking, and the grappler from taking it to the ground. The weapon arts imply the they can stop the unarmed man. A complete martial art implies any fight can go anywhere...be ready and able to go everywhere.

Why would you want to do no throws or standing submissions if you are into Judo?

Also, as PassiveGuy said, you obviously haven't rolled with a good BJJ player. If you had, you probably wouldn't be posting this; I mean, if you don't practice the guard, then what makes you think you can pass one so easily? I hope you can someday roll with somebody who's truly a good grappler... And if you do find somebody good, you should have your teacher grapple with him, too. It would definitely be an enlightening experience.

Good luck with training in Judo, though - it's an awesome martial art.

I would have to agree; you need to find a good BJJ guy to "play guard" with.

I think it's cool that noone blasted you for this opinion. It really isn't as easy as just standing up. Normally when you stand, the guy will open his guard, but if he has ANY BJJ experience at all, he will go to the open guard, and not be dumb enough to give you his ankles. Once you are in open guard (or spider guard)... let the sweeps begin!

(if you find a world class BJJ guy, they can keep you in their guard, either closed or open, without using their arms at all... that's pretty impressive!)

robin judo is great and is essential for takedowns much like wrestling take downs but the guard is an essential part of the ground game. don't think like some guys where they say that "i'll never wind up on my back so i dont need to know the guard' that's bullshit if you compete you will wind up in your guard. the guard is the essence of jiujitsu.

Wink

If you learned the Old Waza like Patterson Hood and me you would know that the guard is way overrated!

lol @ Robin Hood.

Hey Dan, SBG is great. Robert was one of my first instructors. Tell Robert Hi from Paul in AZ. And that the next time I'm back in Portland I'll be by to train for sure.

New Waza? Do you mean Ne Waza? That is the name of Judo ground fighting. At first I thought it was a typo, but Old Waza? What is that?
