Default sanda clips

hi all

i was feeling nostaligic about my old kung fu days so here's some clips of some sanda (full contact kung fu) that i found on the web. it's great to see people training kung fu in an alive and aggressive manner

http://www.boston-kickboxing.com/fight_clip.html

tell me what you think. the takedowns are awesome

Thumbs up

I love this stuff man, San Shou is awsome.

I think I need to pay better attention to martial arts and learn a bit more because it looks so much like kickboxing, and not like CMA with takedowns.

Nevertheless, this shit rules, I wish I could do it.

Default Sanda

There's a clip of Sanda in China that took place in the 80's (with some cool electronica type music). These guys are fighting bare knuckle on a wooden platform, not padded. So when they get taken down, it takes that much more out of them. Plus they were going at it bare knuckle and with their original style.

Anyhow, it looks different than modern san da.

that clip is friggin awesome!

i'm telling you, people that think the chinese styles are weak are so wrong. when they train to fight not just for the art side of kung fu the stuff is mighty strong.

i loved the shoulder strike to the dudes head! makes you think about the importance of being able to strike without the need for gloves. how many hands got broken in the early UFC's? HEAPS! so for the street it really is a priority to be versatile with your strikes.

the takedowns and sweeps in kung fu are outstanding. when i did kung fu i remember the first time i sparred one of the senior students, he swept both my legs out from under me and i fell HARD on the wooden floor. i was swept so many times during my training and it makes you very wary of where you put your feet & makes you very nervous against a good sweeper.

that video plus the sanda videos is proof that kung fu is viable and that like we've all said before it all comes down to training your style in an alive manner against a resisting opponent. thats what separates the wheat from the chaff and brings the legit arts to light.

what saddens me is that so many kung fu schools nowdays spend HUGE amounts of time doing forms rather than emphasising sparring. it has really detracted from the art. if you seriously think that the Chinese would waste their time with fighting styles that dont work when the majority of their 5000 year history has been feudal, well you must be kidding yourself right?

kung fu is a complete way of life, its just a shame that the combat part of it fell out of favour during the cultural revolution and after firearms etc were invented. if you find a good school, learn all you can!

Its a martial art - develops your confidence, fitness, spirit, focus and self-defense.

Chinese style grappling and seizing, qinna, is worth a look. Qinna is not a style in itself, rather an application different styles of gong-fu to grappling.

I've never trained in the system before, but it looks like a combination of wrestling, jujitsu and aikido.

yeah but it just sucks that most schools only teach or emphasise the forms.
these are important for tradition and allowing you to train into older age, as well as being a good form of health but they are in no way a substitute for technique training with a partner and sparring, just like its done in the sport style of boxing, BJJ etc. that's where the real learning occurs.

i think mostly it comes down to there being lots of kung fu teachers that have inherited incomplete training since the cultural revolution when all martial art was banned in China. thus the forms where practiced for health but not the fighting application or sparring. so know we have this generation of KF teachers with little practical knowledge or experience of the styles they represent. only an over-inflated number of forms and all the other stuff like the breathing, meditation, stretching, fitness training etc. basically all the stuff that the government would allow.

its a real shame. KF was never perfect but at least it used to be a living, breathing and most importantly EVOLVING form of combat. now its just stagnant.

that clip made me cry with joy. Its so dangerous and so many people probably got really serious injuries out there, but that is totally off the hook. It looked so much like CMA and the takedowns were very interesting and effective, I really would buy a video with more matches like that.

thats awsome.

That stuff is cool. I just don't like how the fight gets stopped if someone hits the ground, because they usually end up in positions where the person "on top" still hasn't won and would probably get murdered by someone with any ground experience if they let it keep going.

or it could turn into a boring 30 minute stalemate because both of them are very skilled at groundwork.

San da has a long history in the Chinese military, there are different branches and many things/techniques that you don't often see and won't see in the current sport. If you are really interseted, visit www.SanDaTrainingSystems.com we currently have 3 instructional DVD's completed, covering many aspects of the system
