Default Jubaji: A serious question for you

We all know how easy it is to take down someone. Tell me how easy is it to go from ground to standing???? I ask you because I believe you will give a realistic no BS answer from the perspective of an experienced grappler.

That is a good question. Of course, it depends entirely on the circumstances.

First, are you on top or on bottom? Are you in a position of control or not? If you are in control, you can move off in a manner of your choosing (and sometimes you sure want to!). If you are on top, that makes such a move easier of course. Even if it is a guard situation, if you are on top you are in an easier position to initiate a return to the feet. If you are in control but on the bottom you still have some issues to deal with if you intend to regain your feet.

All that having been said:

In most cases, folks on the street don't know what to do with themselves off of their feet. Which is one reason the whole "OH MY GOD NO YOU NEVER EVER EVER NEVER EVER go off your feet in a 'street' fight is so funny. I'll tell ya what; I've wound up across from some big mama-jamas with sharp hand skills who just had it all over me in hand speed and overall size and weight who I very gladly took to the ground where they suddenly became 98 lb weaklings. People who are not comfortable on the ground will thrash (at best) randomly. And if you LET them up it will take a comically long time because they are disoriented and fearful of the shot out of nowhere they know is coming. And they are right. It IS coming out of nowhere because as a fish tries to stand there is no more vulnerable thing in the animal kingdom. If you know what you are doing, you can get to your feet in an aggressive manner (best if in physical contact). I've even found a lot of 'submission'-type guys have been so conditioned to 'rolling' that they will fail to take an RNC successfully because they do not consider their own shifting body weight when transitioning from ground to standing (I'm talking about something as simple as a well executed stand up). Granted, these weren't the top specimens in the world but you get my drift. Folks who are just lost will present target after target as they stumble to their feet or try to keep you down. On the other hand...

It should be noted that an experienced grappler will have experience with this aspect of the range as well. If you are used to getting to your feet (let's say in comp to run up the points with multiple take-downs) often, you are going to be conditioned to watching for the quick reversal or attack once the action is standing again. This applies to the dude on the 'street' who will swing at you if you decide to let him up or notice there are other good reasons to get back on your feet(or the hell out of there). If two scrubs knock each other down and get back up at the same time, the first scrub to swing will probably land one on the other. If you take someone down and get back to your feet and the scrub swings at you it is very likely you will see it coming two weeks early and be well out of range anyway (and hopefully launch a punishing counter).

Getting to your feet can take under a second, or several minutes (or not at all!), and an offensive approach works better than a defensive one as with most effective strategies. And there's no guarantee you won't get the shit knocked out of you on any given day anway!!!

So for all that blather the answer is: It depends.

To add to Jubaji's points I would say it depends on what type grappler you are. As a pure wrestler standing or on teh ground we are in control or getting control that is teh game. So we know how to get out of hold and get to teh feet even easier with striking Other types of grappling arts (JJJ, BJJ, Judo Sambo etc) may or may not want to go standing right away and loose control orf the opponent.
