When UFC started many people didnt thinks grapplers had a chance, then royce changed that perception. Then for a while no body thought stand up fighters had a chance, then Muay Thai stylists changed that perception. Now everybody learns both.
It seems to me that the MMA world is constantly adapting, to beat whichever way of fighting is succcessful at the time. I was just wondering what do people think the next big revalation on how to fight will be? Or do you think the sport has evolved as far as it can go? Are there any revolutionary fighters at the moment who look ready to set a new trend? Will some one soon show us how effective aerial attacks, flashy kicks, pressure points, open hand strikes can be?? What are your thoughts..... |

My thought is that yes, spinning back fists, and spinning kicks are making there way into practicle fight application, but it's obvious the new style is Ground and Pound. Elbows from the mount and back have found their way through the gaurd of some of the best BJJ and JJ guys out there. ground and pound is on the rise I belive as of right now. As well as more cunning kicks and punches.

the new breed of fighters are great strikers/grapplers but now there is a rise of fighters with great takedowns and top control beating up on great stand up and ground fighters.Untill fighters wrestling skills get better these type of fighters will start to dominate.

Also look for a rise in more flashy kicks and whatnot, they are unexpected.. and thats why they can work... see shogun fight, he throws them and he hasnt been doing too shabby lately lol...
Risky moves like flying kicks or flying knees (kness especially) are paying off, I think you might see a bit more of that.... Also, as people have said before, watch for a large influxion of wrestling/GNP into everyones training, not neccessarily doing it but avoiding it.... if everyone knows thai boxing and bjj, which seems to be the common mma formula, they wont deal well with someone who is content to sit in your gaurd and smash you....

I personally think it's lacking a certain amount of innovation that will help the fighters immenseley. It's about being able to look at the situation at hand and doign what is best with it given that you're only limitations are what your human body can do and what your opponent can do. Rather than cut and paste do punch/kick/grappling.

I think a lot has change in the UFC because the ring is so large. It allows you to do more.
The next big thing will be bigger rings. Then we'll see what happens.

Fighters will become more unorthodox. Fighters are trained to respond to a given situation - if this, that - if that, this. I've often heard my instructors say, "you shouldn't even have to think about this move, it should be a reflex to an event." We are taught to respond without thinking and that works fine. However, if you present something that an opponent cant respond to by reflex, you are in a better situation.

i think more guys will be creative and diverse with their technique. guys like genki sudo & st pierre that just throw crazy axe kicks, flying elbows/knees and definately more turning back kicks to the guts. these are not new techniques at all, just that they are lower percentage techs so have been written off for awhile. a good kicker, like a good puncher, can never be written off since they only need one good shot.
guys will come to set up the big technques better since most people dont expect them. when smith knocked out coleman with a head kick the mma world went nuts. but that kick was stock standard and as old a history itself. he just set it up well on a guy that wasn't accustomed to working against high kicks. so to answer your question - more diverse strategy and more complete and unpredictable fighters. not just the carbon copy styles that have been the norm for the last few years |

Is there a rule in UFC about pressure points? i mean if a fighter became well trained in pressure points he could use it to get out of quite a lot of grappling situations...

I'm not aware of any rules as such, KSW, i think that pressure points take so long to train in that no mma fighters have done it. Plus most of the people who do train it arent the kind of people who would want to go into mma. Good point though.
