Last night I watched part of a television show on The Learning Channel called The Martial Arts. It was really quite good. It was broad and informative without being too silly.

They interviewed an old guy in Amsterdam named John Bloomberg (sp). He was an old Judoka who had been in a lot of streetfights and now teaches.

I'd like to read more about this guy. Have any of you heard of him? Do they have a website? I couldn't find anything on the net about him but I might be spelling his name wrong.

He seemed like a no-nonsense old badass.

I think his name is John Bluming(Blooming ? Goddamn martian sounding Dutch.I would like to know more too.i did a search on the web and didnt come up with anything substantial. He did seem like a hardcore and practical guy!He was a kyokushinkai karate man aside froma judoka. There was recently a post here titled "John Bluming on Mas Oyama"I also think he may have been in a Chinese communist POW camp during Korea . Anybody know anything else ?

I wrote that, or more correctly, I copied and pasted that one from somewhere. That’s what they used to call plagiarism. I tried to pull it up on the search, but I can’t get it to work. Basically it was an interview with JB in which he kind of bagged on Oyama. (His instructor) He did it while talking of respect, but it was there.

I’d train with the man in a heartbeat. I like what he is into.

I would like to know something from one of the more advanced or informed Judoka out there. Is JB’s claim of a 10th Dan in Judo legitimate? I was under the impression that 10th Dan is usually granted posthumously?
    No?

    Thanks Duch.

I was not questioning his knowledge. It’s just that most 10th dans in legitimate JMA’s are either dead or well on their way when the rank is granted. Of course where I live there are probably 3 or 4 10th d ranked martial artists teaching out of every other strip mall. Most of them under 30 years old. (such talent around here) I also thought the 10d ranking was in judo.
