Default Hapkido in MMA

Is Hapkido a good art to incorporate into MMA and vale tudo? Why or why not?

Hey TKD_guy89, nice seeing you again.

There's good stuff on Hapkido in the Korean Martial Arts thread.

From the little experience I have in Korean Martial Arts (5 years), I'd say that traditional Hapkido is not a good art to incorporate into MMA because the goals are completely different.

Traditional Hapkido teaches discipline, self-respect, physical fitness and self-defense through martial spirit and martial arts. The goal is to improve the person by improving their mind, body and ability to defend themself.

The self-defense techniques are decent and are usually very well organized, but not all of them are ring or combat proven and you will be required to know 100's of techniques to advance up the ranks.

Combat Hapkido is alot different than traditional hapkido. You spend most of your time perfecting about 5 kicks, 5 strikes and maybe 20 or so principles applied standing up and on the ground. You also get more practical weapons training (knife, stick, rope) vs traditional weapons (staff, sword, spear, fan). You also get a chance to spar and grapple, which you do not get in traditional hapkido.

Royce Gracie has dabbled in combat Hapkido to improve his striking game, so it has some use in MMA.

But its only after you've achieved intermediate level rank or higher and its point sparring. You don't get into contact sparring until the advanced ranks.

TKD_Person89,

For all the lip you give to sport fighters, you sure seem interested in MMA...

If you're so set on validating Korean Martial Arts in MMA, then why don't you go to the local MMA gym and try out your stuff? There's no substitute for personal experience, in my opinion.

Don't take this the wrong way, I'm trying to help.
