Default Royce

This was probably already viewed by many of you, but I just recently happened upon a cool highlights video from Jake Lo productions-

Go to the site http://www.gracieva.com/ AND

on the Right hand side- go to the media section and click on Royce Gracie Highlights

Note: for those of you who remember the early nineties (flannel shirts, music from Beck and Wreckx N Effect) probably remember being in shock seeing this skinny guy in a gi schooling all-comers.

Gotta love that stuff. I hate seeing those morons going out there and either being flower fists or brutes, and I'm glad Royce beat them, especially the last guy, I hated that guy....what a big cocky brute. thanks for the vid, and thank you royce

Yeah was a good vid. Thanks for the link.

From what I could see royce was a dick! He never let go when he had any hold. They guys were tapping the ref was pulling royce off but he still wouldn't let go. Thats not really a very honourable way to sport fight.

I remember seeing royce dominate the UFC and then go up against sakuraba, I loved that fight. Royce looked like a fool the entire time, Saku could showboat the whole fight it was great. He made royce look very untalented in my opinion.

Royce is a super talented grappler I will give him that, but I wonder how he would do now in the UFC. I think it is safe to say that he would get killed.

Lightbulb

hes he did seem like an ass to the guys he tapped, I don't think he was an ass in person however, and he never showboated from my recolection.

Yes his fight with Saku was great, and Saku is my favorite MMA fighter ever. Did Saku showboat on him? I don't rmember that, sure Saku some out in a costume and does double karate chops to the neck, but he is very composed and polite in the ring IMO.

Don't comment on people you've never met. Royce is a class act during and after training or fighting. In the early UFC's much of fault was the refereeing. The refs were very late in recognizing the tap. In the last fight against Gourdeau (the fight in which Royce applies a Rear Naked), Royce has commented that Gourdeau tried to eye gouge, bite and do other nasty tricks while they were in the clinch. Hence, Royce held on a littel longer to let him know it wasn't appreciated. This becomes evident in "Ultimate Royce Gracie."

It wasn't as one-sided as many people believe. I love Saku too, but honestly, in the first few rounds, not much was happening, except for Saku entertaining the fans. Royce was never in any real danger until Saku began throwing kicks. Credit Saku for learning BJJ from Sergio Penha.

And this is based on what? In the earlier UFC's there were hardly any rules and Royce dominated the matches. Even though the UFC has changed a lot, I think Royce could still compete... I'm not saying he would be a devastating force, but for someone his age, Royce has been up-to-date in his training and knows what he can and can't handle. That's all anyonce can ask for.

Yeah I agree with pstevens about gracie not being a dick as you might think if you have only seen that highlight.
I have seen all UFCs and yeah you get a better understanding. The refs where slow as hell back then, and they missed some taps even, so Royce began making sure he didn't let go until the ref stepped in.

But I don't know if Royce would do well NOW in the UFC, as most fighters now know BJJ, in addition to wrestling and muay thai.
But the gracies did a good job of showing how important the ground game is.

Would you like to know? That is a hypothetical question.Huh.

In the first finals UFC 1, he held the RNC longer because his opponent actually bit him at one point during the fight, so he held it longer to make a point.

In his fight against Shamrock. Shamrock actually tapped, but when Royce let go Ken started fighting again and acted like he didn't tap. There were some words exchange but in the end Ken admitted he tapped.

[edit]
I see this has already been addressed.
[/edit]

Personally, I like Royce's fight with the boxer (who wore only one glove). Royce took him to the ground and the guy was clueless. Royce didn't even do anything he just laid on top of him and the guy tapped.

Awesome Vid. Royce should do great as an instructor both in the Dojo and on the seminar circuit. I can't believe how He got into the guard in that one vid. That guy must have been 500 lbs. That's the last place I would want to be on someone that big. But that's what makes him Royce. I have been a Royce fan for a very long time. First time I ever saw him without a ghi top. He's got some strength to go with his technique.

That was not what I was referring to, I never said his personality was in question. It was his in ring showings I was questioning. In the ring he seemed like someone that held holds much longer then he needed to. Even when the ref was pulling him off he wouldn't let go till he decided to. That IMO is being a dick.

I have watched the Saku match many times and it always seemed to me that Saku toyed with Royce the whole match. He didnt seem to be putting effort into anything. The best part was when he was holding Royce's arm outside of the ropes and royce was pounding on his head. Saku had a smile on the entire time, then he spanked him. I mean come on, if you were having trouble with a fight would you take time to spank the person. I know Saku is a showboat and he does it in most of his ring performances but when was the last time you saw saku spank someone other then in that fight. In most of his subsequent fights he always seems to busy to be doing anything other then fighting.

I give props to royce for being a world class grappler and for bringing his sport into the mainstream but he just wouldn't be an effective competitor in the ring today. Pure and simple fact, the skill levels of every fighter today far surpass the brawlers he fought in the old UFC's. And his age? he is younger then cotoure is he not?

Again I mean no disrespect towards him as a person but what I saw in that vid in the way of his victories he was a being a jerk pure and simple. If they tap they tap and you win, there is no reason to hurt the person unduly.
