Apparently he schooled both Bruce Lee and Steve Segal on the effectiveness of grappling, both practitioners of TMAs. I also heard he was a pro wrestler at one point. By all accounts he was (is) a very tough man, but I am not overly fond of the pink gi.

I heard an interesting story about him. Not sure if it's true... but it's funny. Apparently several years ago when the Gracie family was still trying to make a name for themselves and were still in the practice of challenging well known martial artists, the family issued a challenge to Gene LaBell. Based on the way that I heard the story, I'm assuming that is was one of the currently active members (Rickson, Royce, Rorion, ect.) or a couple of them who issued the challenge. All of them are much younger than Gene so this is where the funny part comes in. According to the story, Gene responded in the following manner: "Oh come on, All of you boys are a lot younger than me. you'd whip my ass... but I'll fight your dad (Helio)." Based on what I remember from the story, he never did get a response.

If you guys ever get a chance and are in LA, you need to train at least one class with Gene.
This guy should have been a stand up comedian if not a great martial artist and teacher. He's funny as all hell AND a great teacher. He knows his stuff and he's one tough Muther..... |

What do I think?
Gene is the most kind and generous man alive! As of today, he continues to teach the best of the best! I see children walk up and ask for his autograph. I watch the most rough UFC Fighters beg for his techniques - I've never seen him turn anyone down in which holds a desire to learn. Debra Hartsell |

Gene LeBell's new version of the Encyclopedia of Submissions will be released in March 2006, an additional 800 pages of extreme knowledge.
