Boxers can quit, walk off, take a knee, or just fall down and it still counts as a knockdown because that's precisely what it is. Someone hits you so hard that you voluntarily quit - you got knocked out. I just don't trust stats like those because they always make it look like the next thing you're going to hear is, "And this is why Submissions are better than Strikes."
I know where your comming from Mike but these stats are from Sherdog's Base and only count for MMA....they do not include Boxing or Kickboxing or Grappling stats only MMA.

Because smother is a submission! as funny as that sounds....the persons airway was blocked(his nose and mouth) and could not breath and was forced to tap.If you watch Ricco Rodriguez vs Giant Ochai(rip) you will see Ricco tap him out by covering his nose and mouth with his stomach! it was to funny.

I was thinking the same thing. If you make the categories, say, victory by grappling v. victory by striking then the numbers come out about even. I figured it would average out eventually once some decent strikers started to compete.

In my experience the best fight finishers are:

Left hook
Right cross
Knee to the solar plexus
Elbow to the head (jaw or temple)
Rear Naked Choke
General ponding from a dominant position (mount, half guard)

Some of the good wrestling takedowns will also finish a fight either just from the force of the takedown or from the fact that they provide an instant submission. This may be more relevant for heavy guys as a nasty takedown followed by a 205 lb guy landing on you is pretty nasty.
