Hey there,
Where are you from? I haven't been training that long, but i feel it would be really hard to learn how to grapple on your own...i guess if you've ben taking it for a while you could practice on your own, but to learn would be prtty tough and you'd end up missing alot of subtelties (sp?).

adio,
d

Having recently started rolling again, I have to emphasize that hardcore training with resistent opponents is what gets you good. Grappling is a social thing, and to get to a certain point you have to get on the mat. There's no way around it. BUT...in my year of non-rolling, I worked out immensely with a grappling dummy. I could practice slams, chokes, armlocks, hold-downs, reversals, etc. If you have a good imagination you can make the drills work for you. In fact I owe it to my grappling dummy for keeping me in shape. Now that I'm rolling at a judo school, I am doing quite well...even outdoing a brown belt in newaza...
So I do say that grappling dummies are good. However I have already had instruction, and continue to do so...so you have to learn it right. I would say to get some good tapes by the Gracies, or even Walt Bayless I like, and train them over and over again with a dummy of some sort. But if you can get instruction (even from seminars) I'd advise you to do it

Take care,
Ryu

Cool THE RETURN OF THE GRAPPLING DUMMY!

After all your talking about dummies, I'm seriously thinkin about getting a Blue Dummy from OKfine prod., It's only that it will cost me an eye and leg in money...

Have ever seen a blue dummy from real? are they worth the price?

Try grappling in a barrel. I hear that helps immensely.

Grappling dummies will probably help in the event of no partner.

There are lots of hip drills to practice to keep you thinking about rolling on the ground smoothly. Always remember to practice good form like keeping your arms tucked and chin down.

Plus, keep your aerobic levels up by running or swimming.

Just some suggestions for working out on your own.
