Good topic! My personal experience is that people who are overweight have no extra trouble, except maybe with scooting fast, but that comes later with time and practice. Being overweight and unfit are two different things. If you look at pro-fighters like Abbott, Fedor, Buenatello, Zulu etc. These guys arent typical 6 pack bodies, but they can move and fight awesome.
Id say, stick with BJJ. Its a great workout. Also, being into fitness myself, Id say start some conditioning on the side. |

Well, you have to move your own bodyweight around on the ground, so its good exercise!! On the other hand, if you can use your weight well, you'll get a mean side control.
![]() Seriously, though, give it a go. You'll probably find that the spare will drop off. |

I gained 30 pounds after coming back from three years in Japan, and that extra weight DOES hinder my game. It's slooooowly coming off, but when I started training again I really didn't move the way I did as a middle-weight, especially in the hips. But yeah. People REALLY didn't like to be under my side-control.

I am not sure "overweight" effects your game as much as "out of shape". I think there is a big difference. Someone can weigh 250 plus and still be very smooth on the mat. Someone else can be out of shape and under 200 and not last long at all (cardio wise) Check out www.niagarabjj.com , Esfiha is about 280 / 300 and he moves like 165 lb guy on the mat, however when he uses his weight, it is not good!

what everyone said is true.
We had one guy who came in as a beginner, was pretty much over weight and out of shape at around 230 lbs. Over the months, the guy lost weight, got into shape and got down to around 160 lbs. It was an incredible sight to see and this was within about 6 months. You don't see many guys over weight that train consistently in BJJ. overweight guys in BJJ are like me, train inconsistently because of work, illness and injury...
