hey guys, check out this video. i guess this guy trained a chimp to do martial arts. its great. the chimp even has his own gi.
do u guys think the chimp is smart enough to really understand the concept of a martial art? http://www.videoclipstream.com/akama...ratechimp.html that monkey actually does some really good spin kicks. and i loved the nice little self defense demo the chimp does by stepping on his assailants instep. praise be to god for creating such creatures. |

This is rediculous and I take it as offencive to the martial arts.
This little beast is simply doing tricks it learned from a random, lame, idiotic, and apparently very bored americanized "karate" guy. Apes can't understand language, nevermind the meaning of martial arts, which of course implies many complicated technical, and philosophical concepts. This video makes me sad. |

No, but I can speak in a language and understand systems of symbols.
I never call myself some kind of phenom, I refer to myself as an aspiring martial artist, I certainly am not some kind of martial authority. However, anyone can see how lame this is. Apes don't understand self defene, avoiding conflict, morals, or even fighting, this one jus happens to be able to do a bunch of tricks that look like fighting. |

i mean, isnt this what a lot of people in ma do? they do some kicks, a few self defense moves, break a board here and there and thats about it. yeah i agree that it looks like the chimp is just going through the motions but do you think its possible for such an intelligent animal to possible in the crudest terms undestand the concept of training or learning techniques to fight? i mean, they have taught sign language to these creatures after all. |

If the chimp were attacked it would bite the aggressor or it would run, these techniques will not carry over.
Also, a dog works with a trainer to learn to jump through hoops and such, but this animal has little free will, it simply does as it is told. It does not push itself to better itself, it doesnt understand that its suffering will make it better in the future. |

Gorillas and chimps have been taught sign language and can, in fact, understand spoken words. Gorillas, chimps, dolphins, parrots, elephants, pigs, dogs and cats can also associate words with concepts and can be taught to understand symbols. |

Apes might understand that one hand position means one thing, and that a few words mean this or that, but no animals will carry a conversation or solve a math equation. Even if they could, lets say there is an ape with the brain of a 7 year old. Do any 7 year olds you know understand what it is to be a martial artist, do you even know any 7 year olds you could call a martial artist. sure there are some skilled kids out there, but they wont understand how to put together all the meanings of dicipline and philosophy and conflict avoidence and technique for a long time, lord knows I'm going to be waiting a long time before I call myself a martial artist.
