Which stile is better? The to mane marital arts in Korea are Tie kwon do or hatkido. TKD has better striking skills but hatkido has better joint locks and stuff.
If you had to choose between these to stiles, which won wood you, choose

Hapkido, because it has pretty good striking plus some grappling and joint lock stuff. Also hapkido will be less geared to sport and more geared to self-defence. Definently Hapkido.

Out of those two, I'd say Hapkido. I am no expert in either one, but from what I have heard Hapkido has a much more technical arsenal.

Also it might depend on which TKD you are talking about. I've heard that there is a less sport-oriented type of TKD in Korea.

As with anything I think it really depends on where you are training...when I started TKD it was at Indiana University which has a huge Hapkido program and the TKD program is essentially jido kwan TKD with Hapkido techniques mixed in, whereas the TKD I do now is just TKD but it has heavy emphasis on actual contact and sparring...I really think all the stylistic differences are sort of beside the point. There is no magic system that will defeat any opponent and I think often people get caught up in this way of thinking, (I have to keep fighting back the impulse to go take Wing Chun) heh heh heh honestly I think that the best way to protect yourself is to #1 not be there and #2 buy a gun and bullet proof vest. To me anyway the martial arts are more about the inner growth a person experiences than the ability to defeat other people..I know these two things are linked together but the truth is that combat and the martial arts are two completely different things..how well would Fumio Demura or General Choi do in the UFC (bad example I Guess) they are obviously very talented martial artists but there are no set paths in combat..

heh heh heh

Default Korean arts

If you ever get the chance, check out Hwarangdo. It's like Hapkido, only more brutal. They do weapons stuff too.

TKD and HKD differ greatly from school to school.
