Its a combination of things for me, as well.

I've always loved the martial arts, so even if it wasnt BJJ, I'd train in something. At this point, I have set the goal of someday reaching black belt and opening a school. I also love every minute on the mat, whether Im doing well or not.

For most of the time, my life is a complete wreck. When I fight or spar really hard I have no time to think, and that's good. It's my relaxation method.

Well because I love it, cause you meet a lot of great people. Well in the dojo I train if you are not there for a training and you where suppose my sensei go "nuts" and the next class you know whit who he will show the technics lol. I remember once I could not go to the dojo for a week, when I cameback he banned me for a week lol and when the week after I came he made me fight him for a hour at the end I could not even move lol. Then he looked in the eye and told me "if you would have train those 2 weeks I'l would of not kill you like that" lol.

In this order, I think:

1. self defense & the peace of mind that comes with it

2. the challenge

3. the fun of learning new things

4. the aesthetic beauty of bjj

4. the physical workout

5. the cool people

This is something I wrote about a year ago, when asked to defend to a friend (non-ma) my "fixation" with training:

It seems sometimes that if you have a warrior mind frame you're made the feel "barbaric" by the undisciplined armchair warriors who will never know the thrill of standing across the mat from an opponent who has every intention of dominating you, of imposing his will over you..

and knowing the inner battle you fight to keep your courage, and your head in the battle...

of the inner security you have, knowing that you have tamed your fear..

and finally the knowing nod you give to your opponent, both of you realizing that you have just been a part of something most men will never experience, and quietly fear.

You have overcome your fears and insecurities.

Every workout is a victory over the McDonalds super-size, home-improvement-watching, no-energy-having, stressed-out undisciplined guy that we all know and have sworn not to become.
Every workout makes me better than I was before it. I know that during the rest of the week, in the boardroom or in front of the client, I won't be intimidated, because I have defeated my inner enemies; fear and insecurity.

Knowing there is scumbags on the street. That makes me train 100 times harder.

I love hanging out with my friends, laughing my ass off, having a lot of fun overall and of course the competition, the constant race to be better than the next guy.
There´s nothing more sublime than the feeling of having a good submission locked in and knowing that you will be rewarded with an unavoidable and final tap.
