In MY opinion... It depends on what you mean by "successful". George Foreman has made millions selling his grills!
![]() I tend to favor the OLD SCHOOL guys like Masahiko Kimura (1917-1993), judo 7th dan and Arthur John (Jack) Johnson (1878 -1946) Heavy weight champion boxer. Helio might be the most popular (likened) Gracie fighter in his family but the most over rated goes to Rickson. You just can't count every seminar demo as a "fight" and every challenger as a champion of something and then NOT count your loses...

Wikipedia >>> Jack Johnson>>>On July 4, 1910 in front of 22,000 people, he defeated James J. Jeffries, a champion who had earlier turned him down, with a K.O. in the 15th round. The fight earned Johnson $115,000, and silenced critics who had belittled Johnson's previous victory over Tommy Burns as empty, claiming Burns was a false champion since Jeffries had retired undefeated. His victory sparked race riots and certain states banned the filming of Johnson's victories over white fighters.<<<
He was a pioneer in his day! HURAH!

Talking of older guys, like even older and wiser than Tonto here, that Musashi geezer with the sword fetish was pretty hardcore and successful right. But Clausewitz is over rated.

Its very hard for me to answer these questions, I don't know enough fighters or enough about them. However I do beleive Couture was probably the most likened figther, due to his dignity and humility (as well as fighting prowess). However, there was likely some kind of combat sport fighter on some part of the globe in some time period who was likened to a greater extent, these questions are very hard.
Also: Rickson is not invinsible and he himself knows this. Some of his "wins" were simply in tournaments and they certainly weren't all in big Pride FC events, we all know that. However, I really don't think he has ever lost to be honest with you. I've never see or heard of him losing in any competition, be it sambo/grappling/vale tudo/ect... |

I would have thought more people would have said Shamrock - I think the most obvious choice thought would have to be Ali - Andy Hug was pretty popular weren't he?

The media went crazy after the first couple of UFC's and started marketing him as the World's Deadliest man. I don't doubt that he can cause havock if he wanted to; he's an ex-marine, streetfighter, wrestler and one of the first Americans to get involved in modern MMA (in the late 80's/early 90's in Japanese Pankration). He's beaten Bas Rutten, Dan Severn, Kimo and countless other skilled professional fighters so his record speaks for itself. I just think that the label is a bit overrated. I think someone like Richard Marcinko is more likely The World's Deadliest man.

Most Successful: Rocky Marciano - retired after 47 (I think) title defences undefeated. Mike Tyson - Made more money than anyone else (but was ripped off by everyone). Jack Johnson - Managed to live like a total sucess at a time when black people were not allowed to be successful (though he eventually came unstuck). Most Liked: Tough one. Ali was loved by many but also hated by many. Evender holyfield is almost universally liked. So is Randy Couture. Most overrated: There are too many people too put in this category. It is the nature of the sport that people try and overinflate how good they are. I dont blame them, it is how they make thier living and it is a tough job. |
