ALL martial arts are a tool. They are only as effective as you make them.BJJ sucks too if you arent able to use it.
There is no such thing as a useless martial art. Keith Hackney is a very good example of what a good karate guy can do.But,like all martial arts, you need to crosstrain for the areas they dont cover.

I have no use for katas,horse-stances,box-blocks,etc.
I am now mostly a grappler-BUT I once broke a wrestlers ribs with a TKD side-kick. I guess as the saying goes"Absorb what is useful, reject what is useless" I am sure if you look long enough you can find something useful in every Martial Art-hence the name"Mixed Martial Arts" -Badger [Edited by Badger on 01-23-2001 at 01:38 PM] |

Karate styles and schools that don't practice the art against resistance and in a progressive manner aren't as effective in combat. But then again, the same goes for any art that trains in this manner. I have seen my share of JKD schools that slam traditional arts, yet they practice in the same manner as the traditional arts. The only difference is that it just looks flashier. Karate is in the middle of a HUGE evolution. Just look at all the styles like Kyokushinkai, Enshin, Kenka, Ashihara, Shidokan, etc. They all have a strong traditional base, yet they are effective because they heavily incorporate resistance in their training. The same goes for Taekwondo. It was practiced in a very traditional manner just as most karate styles were practiced. Then protective equipment was introduced along with full contact competition. Now TKD is more streamlined and trained in a more alive manner. Who knows, one day we may see full contact karate or TKD become as much of a part of JKD as BJJ or FMA.
And besides, it's not the art but the practitioner that makes it work.

I've never seen a Martial Art that was useless. Tournaments and their rules have watered down just about any style you can name including BJJ. As to how street worthy a style is it depends on the instructor and his motives. I enjoy tournaments, but I never make the mistake of thinking its the real thing. I've seen a lot of point champions make that mistake & pay the price.

whtown must have gotten his ass kicked by a karate stylist.
what martial art do you practice anyway? or are you just a poser. all martial arts have value, and all offer something to someone. i am sure that there are a lot of stand up fighters that could thrash a grappler and vice versa. bjj id not the best art out there, and mixed martial arts torneys are just as amusing as pro wrestling.
